CROFTON – Maria Wortmann has made quite a name for herself in Northeast Nebraska, and the 5-foot-11 middle from Crofton hopes to continue to do so after high school with her commitment to play volleyball at Wayne State.
Nebraska Juniors director Ryan Gray confirmed the news this week that Wortmann had committed to the Wildcats. Wortmann played this past club season for Nebraska Juniors 172.
Wortmann had success in several sports at Crofton a year ago as a junior. In the fall, she helped lead Crofton to the Class C-2 State Tournament in volleyball and finished the season with 329 kills, 136 blocks and 46 ace serves.
During the basketball season, Wortmann played a key role in helping Crofton capture the Class C-2 state championship as she had eight points and 10 rebounds in the championship win over Hastings St. Cecilia. During track, Wortmann was on the Class C-2 state championship 1,600-meter relay team and also finished third in the shot put and fourth in the discus to help Crofton to the Class C team title.
Wortmann is the first known member of the Wayne State 2015 recruiting class. This week, she also helped Crofton win the Nebraska Top 10 Team Camp title in the Class C-2 division at Kearney Catholic High School
