Top Seeds Advance at MUDECAS Tournament

BEATRICE – It was good to be a top seed in the A Division of the MUDECAS Tournament Monday at Southeast Community College in Beatrice.
All four of the top seeds won the four quarterfinal matches to advance to today’s semifinals.
The most exciting matches of the day were the first two, with each seeing the top seeds rally from early deficits.

Falls City Sacred Heart – ranked #7 in Class D-2 – rallied past Class D-1 #7 Nebraska City Lourdes CC 20-25, 25-16, 25-14 in the first match of the day. That was followed by Class D-2 #5 Exeter-Milligan coming from behind to top Class D-1 #4 Diller-Odell 18-25, 25-18, 25-18. Falls City Sacred Heart and Exeter-Milligan will paly in a 7 p.m. semifinal match today at SCC.
Diller-Odell used a 9-2 run to close the first set to take a 25-18 victory. Madison Hajek had two blocks and a kill in that span for the Griffins and Madison Jurgens had the final two kills.
In the second set, a kill by the Timberwolves’ Hailey Luzum gave Exeter-Milligan a 14-10 lead and started a 10-2 run that lead to the Timberwolves forcing a third set. In the third set, with Exeter-Milligan leading 18-17, Amber Pribyl and Luzum had back-to-back kills for the Timberwolves to spark a 7-1 run to end the match.
In the other semifinals, Class D-2 #4 Johnson-Brock cruised to a 25-12, 25-12 win over BDS. An ace serve by the Eagles’ Kendra Alberts gave Johnson-Brock a 3-2 lead in the first set and it never trailed again during the match.
In the night’s final match, Class C-2 #1 Freeman rolled to a 25-16, 25-10 win over Pawnee City. Freeman and Johnson-Brock will play a semifinal match at 8:15 p.m. tonight at SCC.
The Falcons, 11-0, used strong surges at the end of each set to come out on top. Freeman finished the first set on a 6-1 run while they closed-out the second set on an 11-0 run.
In the B Division of the MUDEECAS Tournament at Beatrice High School, all four quarterfinal matches were 2-0 sweeps as HTRS beat Lewiston, Palmyra defeated Southern, Sterling got past Johnson County Central and Meridian beat Parkview Christian.
