OMAHA – After going 2-4 at the Bellevue Invitational to start the season, Omaha Gross set a rather lofty goal of not losing again the rest of the season.
Three-and-a-half weeks later, that goal remains in tact as the Cougars pushed their winning streak to nine straight matches after the Bellevue Invite with a 25-21, 25-13 win at Class B #10 Omaha Duchesne Tuesday night.
Earlier in the day, each team swept South Sioux City as part of a triangular. The win improved Class B #7 Omaha Gross to 11-4 on the season while the loss dropped the Cardinals to 12-9.
A victory seemed anything but secure most of the first set for the Cougars. After jumping out to an early 11-6 lead, Gross slowly let Duchesne back in the set as the Cardinals tied it at 15-15 on a kill by Sam Draper.
Duchesne later took a 21-19 lead in the opening set on a kill by freshman Julianna Kalil, but a service error opened the door for a Gross rally and the Cougars took advantage. Gross finished the set on a 6-0 run and won the set on a kill by Brittany Fleming.
The second set started out tight as well, with Duchesne holding a 6-4 lead, but Gross proceeded to go on a 10-1 with Fleming having three kills in the stretch and Bailey Meehan added two ace serves and the second-set outcome was never in doubt thereafter.
Omaha Duchesne will host Blair on Thursday night before competing in the Omaha Mercy Invitational on Saturday while Omaha Gross next plays in the Ashland-Greenwood Invitational that runs Thursday through Saturday.
