Recap from Thursday, Oct 29: Marian Wins Metro; Silverhawks Take HAC

Thursday night turned into “statement night” in Nebraska high school volleyball as some of the top teams in the state had emphatic performances as the regular season heads into its final weekend.

Class A’s top-ranked squad – Omaha Marian – controlled the Metro Conference Tournament championship match from the outset in taking a 25-19, 25-19, 25-13 over #3 Papillion-LaVista. The win snapped a stretch of five consecutive runner-up finishes in the tournament for the Crusaders.

“It’s definitely something we were hoping to get, but I didn’t want to place too much emphasis on it,” Marian coach Amy McLeay said of the conference title. “It’s definitely a stepping stone to where we’re going to go in the next two weeks, especially with this high caliber of a team. I’m very pleased.”

Senior Augustana recruit Sophia Terwilleger led the Crusaders with 13 kills and also had seven digs on the night while Elizabeth Loschen added 11 kills and freshman Emily Bressman finished with 10. Brittany Witt finished the match with 24 digs while Maren McGuire had 38 assists and Katie Belford added three ace serves.

In North Platte, the second-ranked Bulldogs also got a sweep against a high-caliber opponent with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-19 win over Class C-1 #1 Kearney Catholic.

Meanwhile, in Lincoln, the championship match of the Heartland Athletic Conference went five sets as #5 Lincoln Southwest rallied to take a 23-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 15-8 win over #7 Lincoln Southeast.

Wichita State recruit Allie Davis led Lincoln Southwest with 17 kills while Brenna Hansen had 15 and sophomore Rachel Walker added 12. Taylor Els had 34 digs for the Silverhawks and Katie Siefkes had 20. Hailey Bax finished the night with 26 assists and Walker added 25.
