Not only that, there are so many teams breaking through this season so the road to state will be fun to watch in class C2 this year. Here’s a predictions of the 8 possible teams who could potentially be battling for a state title in November. This is NOT the official list of teams going to state, this is just a prediction of the teams who could potentially make it based on how they’re playing so far this season.
Hartington CC
Hartington Cedar Catholic is one of the last 2 undefeated teams left in class C2. We could potentially see them and Nebraska Christian take their undefeated records into the state tournament. The Trojans have only dropped 5 sets all season and they could be one of the favorites to win it all in class C2. They not only have Nebraska Christian who’s also undefeated in their way, but they also have Centura and Archbishop Bergan who could be threats to them winning a state title. We’ll just have to see who plays their best volleyball come November.
Nebraska Christian
Despite having a 3-0 sweep against Centura earlier this season, Nebraska Christian has had an easier schedule like Hartington Central Catholic. Taking an undefeated record into districts and state can put a lot of pressure on a team, but the Eagles are capable of overcoming that pressure. If they and Hartington both end up being the top 2 seeds in the state tournament, we could potentially see 2 undefeated teams playing for a state title which would be a fun match to witness.
Centura
The Centura volleyball team currently has a 19-3 record and is hoping to make it to state in back-to-back seasons this year. If Centura wants to win it all this year they potentially have to play one of 2 unbeaten teams to do so. Not only do they have Hartington CC and Nebraska Christian in their way, they also have Archbishop Bergan and Stanton to look out for.
Archbishop Bergan
Archbishop Bergan has been a breakout team this season in class C2. With junior Lexie Langley leading the charge, the Knights are still one of the top 5 teams in the state. Despite having a slight setback during their conference tournament, the Knights are looking to rebound and get ready for districts. This Bergan team has the potential to win a state title as well in class C2.
South Loup
With their 22-2 record, you have to believe South Loup has what it takes to make it to state this year. They haven’t gotten the chance to play against some of the other C2 powerhouse teams yet this year, but they definitely will if they make it to state. Anything can happen in the state tournament, so we can’t count this South Loup team out of winning a state title in November.
Stanton
Stanton is another team we need to look out for in class C2. They have taken sets from both Hartington CC and Nebraska Christian, so they’ve proven they can hang with the best teams in the state. They’ve also taken a set from North Bend Central who is the last undefeated team left in class C1. Stanton swept Diller-Odell for the C2 state championship a year ago after falling short in the 2015 state title match. You better believe the Mustangs want to repeat as champions this year.
Superior
It seems like every team in the top 10 of the class C2 ratings is having a successful season so far, and Superior is one of those teams. Sophomore Husker commit Kalynn Meyer has been leading the way for the Wildcats this season and wants to take her team to state. Even though they haven’t played as many top ranked C2 opponents either, they still have what it takes to make it to the state tournament in November.
Palmyra
The Palmyra Panthers currently have an 18-4 record and have what it takes to make it to state this year. They have Archbishop Bergan in their subdistrict which will be tough, but if they can get 2nd in their district they could possibly get a wild card to go to state or get in by upsetting Bergan. That’s easier said than done. A lot of the top ranked teams in C2 haven’t played each other and Palmyra is one of those teams that hasn’t played a lot of top ranked teams. Despite that though, they’re ranked in the top 10 and have a good chance at qualifying for the state tournament.
Like I said before, this is NOT the official list of teams making it to state in November. This is just a list of teams who could potentially make it based on how they’ve been playing this season. We still have to look out for teams like Ponca, Battle Creek and Hartington-Newcastle during district play. These 3 teams in particular are teams who could potentially cause upsets during districts.
