15/16 GLPL Super Open – Class of 2020 All Tournament Team
Three teams ran away from the rest of the Wisconsin clubs this weekend, all going 6-0 over the course of the weekend, setting themselves up to do battle in the top bracket when GLPL resumes February 10. Wisconsin Juniors 16-1, Capital Adidas 16-1, and Motion 16 Blu (did not drop a set) came out unblemished in match play. Wisconsin Volleyball Academy 16 Black went 4-2 with three wins on Sunday as well as FC Elite 15 Navy, and Midwest Penguins 15 Black. The 16s teams are accustomed to the speed and intensity of an opening weekend of GLPL, with college coaches from across the country as well it’s an exciting and sometimes overwhelming atmosphere. The 15s level will come back knowing what to expect with the jitters out which always makes for a competitive second weekend.
Here is an All Tournament Team for the Class of 2020 (The 16s level). Like most tournaments, the teams who have great success tend to have more members on the all tournament team. This is strictly an eye test along with input from other club coaches, some college coaches, and what we’ve seen so far at GLPL. With great competition, comes the best out in athletes and here is a list of 2020 prospects who had a stock rising weekend.
Also to note, River City Volleyball Club out of Watertown went 6-0 on the weekend in the general GLPL series.
Outsides
Julia Treichel – Motion MVP 16 Blu – Wisconsin Lutheran HS
Treichel plays with fire. She approaches with such force and power she puts everything into her swing. With a high contact point, she has the ability to hit over the block, use the block, and blast away on a one on one opportunity. Her energy is contagious for her Motion teammates, which are such a fun group to watch! They smile, they celebrate, the do the things that good things should do! Treichel is the go to, but there still is incredible balance on this team. Keep an eye on Treichel throughout the club season. After talking with some college coaches, they will be keeping an eye on her too.
Courtney Pearson – Wisconsin Volleyball Academy 16 Black – Kimberly
Game changer. Pearson did not play on Saturday, due to playing for Kimberly’s top ten rated girls basketball team. Long and athletic, Pearson makes the sharp angle shots look easy. Pearson teamed with WVA setter, Kalli Mau to make a run at state this past fall for the Papermakers. WVA 16 Black had some tough matches on Sunday, but came out on top in all three. Pearson is the difference maker and always provides an outlet to the front and backrow for WVA.
Right Side
Madeline Siedenburg – Motion MVP 16 Blu – Kettle Moraine HS
Siedenburg fits the bill of the rest of the Motion team. Scrappy and very athletic. She poses a threat on the right side where she can swing out of the middle or take off on one foot and put the ball down with force. Siedenburg could play on the left side as well, but is very terminal from the opposite that teams have to respect her when she’s in the front row. She had a great weekend at the Winter Classic in Milwaukee and followed up again at GLPL
Middle Blockers
Karina Leber – Wisconsin Juniors 16-1 – Wilmot Union HS
Welcome to the big show Karina Leber. Leber will be on the radar of plenty of college coaches after a bust through weekend at GLPL. Leber is 6’3, can run the slide, a fast tempo set, and moves very quickly from pin to pin. To say Leber plays high is an understatement. She holds the block on the other side due to being such a threat that her outsides are able to get a lot of one on one matchups. A great combination of finesse and power.
Sarah Mattes – Motion MVP 16 Blu – Greendale HS
Motion is not a tall team by any means, they know it, the teams across the net know it, but their athleticism and skill will beat you. Mattes is a prime example. As an undersized middle, she is incredibly quick and had some swings that were down before before the block was even up. Down underestimate her, she will beat you with her quickness laterally across the net and a quick snap.
Setter
Karlee Lois – Wisconsin Juniors 16-1 – Union Grove HS
Great footwork, smooth release, left handed, with the ability to spot any corner. Louis makes the machine of Wisconsin Juniors go. She is incredibly gritty, scrappy, and smart putting her hitters in the right position and as well as when to go for the attack. Teams look flat out confused when playing Juniors because they have no idea where the ball is going. Louis keeps everyone on their heels, but is also a very physical setter who can block at attack.
Libero
Sheridan Dettman – Capital 16 Adidas – Watertown HS
Solid and consistent. Capital has such a strong defense, the ball just doesn’t seem to drop, and the consistency behind that is Dettman. Always cool, calm, and collected Dettman moves very smoothly around the court, is stopped on contact, and always puts the setter in position to run the offense.
Katherine Walch – FC Elite 16 Navy – Notre Dame Academy (Green Bay)
She gets everything! This is just an observation and something that coaches and fans will comment on about Welch. Incredibly gritty and scrappy, there is no ball out of reach for Welch. She just reads incredibly well and seems to be in the right spot at the right time. There were plenty of times where you thought the ball was down or out of play, and BOOM – there’s Welch. A fun player to watch, Welch may not score points for FC Elite, but she sure does save a lot!
