VCNebraska 18 Black’s sweep of Elite 18 MOAB combined with a three-set win by CIA 18 Black over Northern Lights 182 in the final matches of pool play on Sunday afternoon created a four-way tie, with only the top three teams advancing to Monday’s championship bracket.
Based on set winning percentage, Elite, Northern Lights and CIA all advanced and VCNebraska went to the silver bracket despite owning head-to-head wins over each of the other three.
Then, on Monday, Elite 18 MOAB cruised to a 25-17, 25-13 win over Topeka Impact in the quarterfinal before scoring a major upset over the #23 in the nation – Northern Lights 181 – 14-25, 25-21, 19-17 in the semifinals.
In the championship match, 18 Elite MOAB once again rallied, this time for a 26-28, 25-16, 15-12 win over CIA 18 Black to secure the 18 Open title on an ace block by Maddie Wiedenfeld (Omaha Marian).
In the 17 Open division, VCNebraska 17 Elite had a real nice tournament, showing it belongs ranked among the nation’s best in its age group. VCNebraska beat #47 Dynasty 26-24, 25-16 in the championship semifinal before falling 25-21, 25-20 to #6 Northern Lights 171 in the championship.
In the 16 Open division, #3-ranked Asics MAVS 161 lived up to its ranking, winning all nine of its matches in straight sets, including a 25-11, 25-15 win over Nebraska Elite 15 Revolution in the finals. For the weekend, no team scored 20 points or more against MAVS 161 in any set.
Nebraska Elite again had a team in the championship on Monday in the 15 Open division where Elite 15 Revolution suffered a 25-18, 25-15 loss to Northern Lights 151 – the #17 team in the nation.
