Fundraiser for Volleyball Coach’s Newborn Battling Heart Issue
As the head coach at North Platte Community College, Alexa McCall knows that this is prime recruiting season. But, for roughly the last three months, McCall’s sole focus has been to do everything in her power to bring her most prized prospect home – newborn daughter Hadlee.
Hadlee was born on January 19th of this year and shortly thereafter she was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, where she and the family have been ever since. In the simplest of terms, Hadlee was born with holes in her heart.
At just over a month old, Hadlee’s heart stopped and she needed CPR. But just about three short weeks (with multiple open-heart procedures under her belt) Hadlee had rebounded well and enough and gotten strong enough to move out of the Pediatric Intensive Care unit. Due in part to some of the antibiotics Hadlee is on, the McCalls will still be calling Omaha home for at least a few more weeks.
In the meantime, there has been a outpouring of support from the volleyball community, including Scott Mattera of Innovation Volleyball. McCall began her college coaching career under Mattera at Concordia University in Seward. Mattera now runs Innovation Volleyball and has set-up a fundraiser for the McCall family this Saturday in North Platte, which includes volleyball skills clinics at NPCC where he and some of McCall’s players will serve as instructors. Every penny from the volleyball skills clinics will go to the McCall family.
You can get more information about the clinic in North Platte HERE.
You can also donate directly to the family if you are unable to attend the clinic on the McCall YouCaring page HERE.
The McCall family has been staying in Omaha the entire time of Hadlee’s stay. The fundraisers are to help offset lost wages, the expenses of being away from home and the mounting medical bills.
