This year we played at the Girls’ Junior National Championship held in Detroit Michigan. Tradition is to bring a gift to share with all of the teams you play to represent your team or state. Since we play for Wisconsin Ice, we traded ice packs with all the teams. Tuesday morning we played at 9:00 a.m. against a team from Pennsylvania. After that game, we had two more matches at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. They were teams from Ohio and Texas.
The first three matches didn’t end up as well as we wanted, but now we had an idea of what the rest of the week would bring. After playing, we headed back to the hotel and walked over to get ice cream and then ordered pizza when we got back. The next day we played at the same times. The teams we played were from Kansas, Florida, and Illinois. The second day also didn’t end up like we wanted, but we hoped we could pull off a win for our last pool play game on Thursday.
When we got done, we took the train around the city and stopped to get ice cream. We made it back to the center where we watched the National Collegiate team scrimmage; and lastly, to end the night off, we dressed up and went out for a team dinner. On the third day, some of us went to lunch and did some shopping before we played our last pool play match against a team from Iowa. We took this match to three games and pulled off a win. We played one more game that night and had to head back to the hotel because we had an 8 a.m. game the next morning.
On Friday we took our match to three games, but unfortunately, we did not pull off the win, so this officially ended our season. Although we did not win as many matches as we would have liked to, I think we all learned a lot about ourselves and our teammates. It was a really good learning experience because we brought players that we had not played with all year, so it really challenged all of us, and it will help us work harder in our upcoming seasons!
