Both squads have a lot of returning starters from 2017, and both teams have a lot of firepower. Stratford did win in 4 sets: 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19. Let’s take a look at just a few of the top playmakers!
Stratford
STRATFORD
Mazie Nagel – 2019 – 5’10 – Outside Hitter – Not Committed
Nagel is an impressive player; but more importantly, she is driven, and she drives this team. She hits a hard power alley, can pound the line, a hard cut, and hits a nice deep cross corner shot. Nagel sees the block well and does a great job of working around it with either hitting hard off the shoulder of the block or rolling into the middle. Out of serve receive, she has a strong crossbody shot out of the middle.
Nagel also runs a fast 3-1 and can pound that hit down the line as well. My best advice when facing Nagel is to get a block up or run! She also puts up a nice block on the right side hitter or slide. Nagel doesn’t just earn points in the front row, she also has a strong float serve and strong defensive moves.
Lauryn Nagel
Lauryn Nagel – 2021 – Middle Blocker – Not Committed
This Nagel works from the middle, and she puts up a nice block; but when she is attacking, she sees the block well and uses hands. Nagel does a nice job powering thru the block and hitting the corners. Before the libero gives her a break, she takes advantage of the opportunity to earn some more points for her team by using a strong float.
Blaire Lindner – 2019 – Outside Hitter – Not Committed
Lindner hits a strong power alley and uses the block well. She identifies a weak or small blocker well and takes advantage of them by taking a hard line shot.
COLUMBUS CATHOLIC
Maren Seefluth
Jessica Jakopin – 2020 – 5’10 – Middle Blocker – Not Committed
Jakopin hits a hard cut from the middle and really smart tips to work around the block. But more impressively, she is a blocking machine! Jakopin had 5 blocks in the Stratford match alone. She also plays with a high volleyball IQ, knowing when to take a ball on the 2nd contact. Out of serve receive, Jakopin takes a hard swing on the right side that ensures a side out.
Maren Seefluth – 2019 – 5’8 – Outside Hitter – Not Committed
Seefluth can skillfully find the deep cross corner and mixes it up with a roll shot over the block. She sees the block well and finds a shot over it and into the middle back. Seefluth plays with experience and sees the court well to make plays, such as pushing the ball down the net when the opponent’s outside is crashed into the court.
