As a high school coach, I pushed my team to play outside of our conference and our area. I had pegged the Sparta Invite a year ago as a tournament with a great mix of teams playing at different levels. This always makes it fun to find the big playmakers!
Sammy Blackdeer – 2019 – Outside Hitter – Black River Falls
Blackdeer is a crowd pleaser. The tiger fans LOVE to see her hit, and I can totally see why. She not only gets up, but she reaches so high and really snaps down on the ball for a dramatic kill. Blackdeer also makes smart plays by using the block, making smart shots, and pounds the line. She also puts pressure on from the service line with a great mix between aggressive serves and a tricky short serve that just trickles off the tape. Blackdeer is available but looking to stay in the area, so she would be an awesome pick-up for UW-Lacrosse, Viterbo, Winona State, or UW-Eau Claire. (Tight set? No problem for Sammy Blackdeer. – See clip. And just for records sake, I am not the one saying “boom”. This is commonly being yelled from the BRF crowd when Blackdeer takes a swing.)
Laney Schell – 2020 – 5’9 – Right Side/Setter – Sparta
Schell has really nice hands and with her decent height, she handles tight passes really well. Oh, and even better, she’s a lefty! She has a nice high reaching swing and can pound the line from either pin. Schell sets up and puts up a huge block with both of Sparta’s big middles. Then when she rotates to the back row, she takes the opponent out with a low, flat, aggressive serve and sees the court really well to play good defense.
Bailey Imhoff – 2020 – 5’9 – Setter/Right Side – Edgar
Imhoff finds a way to get the point. She uses smart tips, powers through the block, and hits high over the block from either pin. Imhoff also sets a nice block and protects the net.
Malerie Vining – 2020 – 5’8 – Outside Hitter – Fall Creek
Vining sees the block really well and is a super smart attacker. She pounds the split, finds hands to use, and works around the block like its her day job.
Nadia NielsenEmma Ryan – 2021 – 5’10 – Middle Blocker – Fall Creek
Ryan reaches so high and off the block. Tight set? No problem, she handles it with such smart tips. Ryan uses the block a lot with her fast swing and does a great job of finding the corners.
Nadia Nielsen – 2020 – Outside Hitter – Sparta
Nielsen has a great cut or she can power through the block. If that doesn’t get the kill, she can hit a hard line, swing high over the block, or pull out a deep line power tip. She has a ton of shots, and she does a great job of mixing them up to be a very effective hitter.
Abigail Bell – 2020 – 5’4 – Libero – Fall Creek
Bell does a nice job of controlling the hard driven balls and works as a very solid defender. She’s also a strong server, moves well in serve receive, and runs a scrappy defensive team.
