Burlington did not drop a single set. And no team earned more than 16 points on them. They came to win on Saturday and did just that. Junior Emily Alan had 13 kills against Martin Luther alone. Junior Kaley Blake (Prep Dig Rank #7, Committed to UW-Milwaukee) had 15 assists against Martin Luther and led the team in assists for the day. She is a great player who is dynamic and quick. Sophomore Samantha Naber (Prep Dig Rank #4, Committed to Marquette), was a consistent force for the Demons. She provided nearly impenetrable defense for Burlington. This young leader on the team is a great asset.
Martin Luther’s only loss was to Burlington. Martin Luther’s middles and setters made a huge impact throughout the day. Senior Bonnie Jensen provided consistency across the court. Though she is middle, she is also a strong defender, playing all 6 rotations for the Spartans. She went on a few key serving runs and was solid on both offense and defense on Saturday. Junior Sydney Burris was strong on offense, bringing in some big kills for Martin Luther. Setters Emma Spaciel and Audra Roob orchestrated the offense well and moved quickly throughout the day. Their leadership on the court and ability to move the ball around helped the Spartans to their second-place finish.
Hale competed well, but dropped a few games, leaving them in third place at their home tournament. Their strong defense kept them competitive throughout the day. Both their defensive specialist, Micaela Fisher, and their libero, Olivia Adams, were key players for the Huskies. This growing program brought home some big wins throughout the day.
West Allis Central took fourth place, Saint Francis, fifth, and Racine Park, sixth place.
This weekend was key for smaller, competitive, and growing programs such as Martin Luther and West Allis Hale, both of which have new varsity coaches this year. The tough competition gave them the opportunity for a high level of play throughout the day.
