WAVERLY – Class A #9 Gretna got big nights from senior Kamryn Schuler and junior Lydia Yost to take a 27-25, 25-21, 25-20 win over Waverly on Thursday night in an Eastern Midlands Conference match.
Schüler and Yost each finished with 17 kills for the Dragons and Schuler also added 18 digs as the Dragons improved to 5-2 on the season. Waverly dropped to 3-4 with the loss.
All three sets were tight, but it was Gretna that pulled away late in all three of them. With Gretna leading 24-22 in the first set after a kill from Emma Prentice, Waverly tied it back up at 24 on an kill and service ace from sophomore Whitney Lauenstein. Another Prentice kill gave Gretna it’s third set point, but again the Vikings had an answer, this time in the form of a Kelsey Perrotto kill.
Gretna eventually put the first set away on back-to-back kills from Yost and Schuler.
The second set was tied at 19-19 until a Schuler kill and ace serve from Baylie Shearer gave the Dragons a 21-19 lead. Waverly got within 22-21 on a Gretna service error, but two Yost kills sandwiched around one from Prentice allowed Gretna to end the set on a 3-0 run to win 25-21.
Waverly got as close as 23-20 late in the third set against Gretna on a kill by Lauenstein, but a Viking service error and ace serve from Jadyn Makovicka ended it for Gretna.
Kenedy Schaecher had 17 digs for the Dragons and Shearer finished with 51 assists.
