It’s always fun to take a look back, whether it’s at the past or just at previous prep athletes that are playing at the next level. Here are a few former preps that are in some big programs.
Minnesota
Lauren Litzau – 5’8 – Defensive Specialist/Libero – Greendale
Litzau comes from a volleyball family, and that background has served her well. She has gained invaluable experience at a top-notch university under a world class coach. She is a regular selection for the Academic All-Big Ten. Litzau helped turn the Greendale program into regulars at the Resch while recording a career 1,149 kills, 829 digs, and 506 assists.
Wisconsin
Mallory Dixon – 5’9 – Setter – Manitowoc Lincoln
Dixon has seen limited playing time but is gaining priceless experience as well as academic honors. She was a standout at Lincoln tallying 3,854 assists, 1,074 digs, and 251 aces. Dixon earned 3-time Honorable Mention All-State and 3-time Fox River Classic Conference Player of the Year.
Sarah Dodd – 5’4 – Libero – Kenosha Temper
Dodd finds a way onto the court somehow and makes the most of those opportunities. She makes contributions on defense as a serving or defensive specialist. Dodd was an AVCA Under Armour All-American, 2nd Team All-State, and 3-time Southeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Mariah Whalen – 6’1 – Outside Hitter – Newman
Whalen had limited playing time in her sophomore season after redshirting her freshman season due to injury. She was #37 on PrepVolleyball Senior Aces, Fab 50, PrepVolleyball and MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year, 2-time MaxPreps All-American, JVA All-American, and led Newman to 4 straight State Championships. Whalen recorded 2,812 kills, 1, 225 digs, and hit an impressive .387 in order to earn 1st-Team All-State twice and a 4-time All-Conference selection.
Nicole Shanahan – 6’2 – Middle Blocker – Oconomowoc
Shanahan has seen limited playing time in her first 2 seasons for the Badgers. She helped establish a winning tradition at Oconomowoc while winning 2 Wisconsin Little Ten Conference Championships. Shanahan recorded a 64-9 record in her four seasons while earning 2nd-Team All-State and 1st-Team All-Conference honors.
M.E. Dodge – 5’10 – Libero – East Troy
Dodge has found substantial court time the past 3 seasons for the Badgers as well as the obvious energy she brings to the court. She was ranked 57th on PrepVolleyball’s list of Senior Aces, 3-time 1st-Team All-State Selection, 2-time River Valley Conference Player of the Year, 4-time 1st-Team All-Conference, and MaxPreps All-American. Dodge tallied 2,153 kills and 1,506 digs in her career at East Troy.
Kentucky
Anna Nyberg – 6’2 – Middle Blocker/Right Side – Tomahawk
Nyberg was a standout in the Central Wisconsin area leading the Hatchets to the Resch Center 3 times. She was ranked #68 in Prep Volleyball’s Senior Aces, 1st Team All-State honors, GNC Player of the Year and GNC All-Conference First Team. Nyberg has seen some playing time in her 3 seasons at Kentucky so far and will be gearing up for a big senior season.
Kylie Schmaltz – 5’8 – Libero – Verona
Schmaltz has seen limited playing time in her 3 seasons with Kentucky. She was a 3-time 1st Team All-Conference honoree in volleyball and successful in track after switching from years of playing hockey. Schmaltz led Verona as an outside hitter her senior year.
