Division 2 seemed to be a two horse race all season. Grand Rapids Christian and Notre Dame Prep were favorites to meet up in the finals. In the end, Grand Rapids Christian dominated the finals en route to a three set sweep over Notre Dame Prep. Jordy Gates had a lot to do with the success of Grand Rapids Christian all season. Her 38 assists and 29 digs in the finals is a stat line we have been use to all season with Jordy. Jordy, who is a 2020 Arkansas Razorback commit, led Grand Rapids Christian to a 46-5 record on the year.
According to her coach Tiffanie Gates, “Jordy is one of the most tenacious and competitive players that I have ever coached. To use a phrase that is fitting for her: she hates losing more than she loves winning. Jordyn is determined to win every point and she brings her team along with her in that mind set. She leads by example demanding the most of herself and also of her teammates day in and day out”.
Other players in consideration – Maddy Chinn (OH – Notre Dame Prep), Natalie Risi (OH – Notre Dame Prep), Allyson Severance (OH – North Branch)
Division 2 Coach of the Year – Shane Balcom (Coopersville)
The 2018 volleyball season was Coopersville’s head coach Shane Balcom’s 8th. We think Shane had a special year with his group. This year was a huge step forward in many ways. Although Coopersville got knocked out of the playoffs in the regional semi’s to eventual champion Grand Rapids Christian, the season cannot go unnoticed. Coach Balcom led the way in leadership and developing a culture of winning. He returns several players next season and we expect Coopersville to be in the talks of a Division 2 state championship run in 2019.
Others in consideration – Kari Carnell (Corunna), Tiffanie Gates (Grand Rapids Christian), and Cameron Rowland (Lake Odessa Lakewood)
