The Badger Region Power League (BRPL) hosted teams from all over the state at every age. There was plenty of hidden talent at every location, but here are a few dynamic athletes and hidden gems that I caught playing that first weekend.
Dynamic Athletes
Jordan Berglin – 2021 – Outside Hitter – Pewaukee – Midwest Penguins 16 Black
Berglin is arguably one of the most dynamic athletes in most gyms, and she will be a great addition to any college program. Berglin is a strong six-rotation outside and an all-around player who was key for Pewaukee in 2018 with 229 kills. She has a high contact point and sets up a strong block. Berlin can pound the ball down the line, make a smart and well-timed tip, or place a sharp cut shot. Berglin has nothing but her best volleyball ahead and will be a catalyst for the Penguins.
Josie HalbeibJosie Halbeib – 2021 – 6’2 – Setter/Right Side – Sun Prairie – Capital 16 Adidas
Halbeib has great height at 6’2 and she has a smooth release and location on her sets for Capital. She can play solid defense in the back row and puts up a HUGE block to frustrate opponents’ key hitters. She is even more dynamic when she attacks.
Hattie Bray – 2021 –6’2 – Middle Blocker – Wautoma – FC Elite 16 Navy
Wautoma is losing a batch of seniors who helped with a surge in the South Central Conference. It’s no secret their go-to player will be Bray, a middle blocker who could make a great impact at the next level. She will be looking to make an impact, and with her explosive style of play, I’m sure she will. Bray puts up a solid block and can also score points from the middle or right side running an effective slide. She is a downright gritty player and one to watch for in the future.
Kaitlyn Riley – 2021 – 6’3 – Middle Blocker – Catholic Memorial – Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold
Riley is a powerful and physical middle blocker for Sting. She could be a very effective right side or run the middle in a collegiate program. Her high reach and ability to take off on one foot gives Riley plenty of options to score. She is also a solid defender at the net with great timing and puts up a large block. She still has two more years at Catholic Memorial and definitely has the physicality and tools to be a huge pickup at the next level.
Hidden Gems
Kara Schmit – 2022 – Outside Hitter – Divine Savior Holy Angels – Milwaukee Sting 15 Gold
DSHA is always full of athletes and is consistently making deep runs in the post season. With a program that always competes, Schmit could help fill some big shoes next season. She is athletic and moves well. With a hard line swing, Schmit can put the ball away or set up a solid block.
Katie Gund – 2022 – Setter/Right Side – Pewaukee – Milwaukee Sting 15 Black
Extremely dynamic! When watching Gund play, she has the athleticism, poise, and skill to compete at the next level. And the best part, she still has 3 more years of high school. Gund has the ability to set or hit and is also a solid defender at the net and in the back row. She has nice hands and quick distribution. Gund also swings hard when she finds a split and shows super hustle on the court.
Lauren Baker – 2022 – Middle Blocker – Midwest Penguins 15 Black
Baker played with intensity. She isn’t the biggest middle, but has smart shots, along with a decent vertical and power. Baker will be a solid player when high school roles around, and it shouldn’t be a surprise if you see her name more in the future.
Madelyn Weyda – 2022 – 5’8 – Pin Hitter – Germantown – Milwaukee Sting 15 Gold
Weyda is another new kid on the block, but certainly isn’t missing a beat. She can play on either pin and can hit hard, hit shots, and play all the way around. Weyda stays engaged, moves well and has a great vertical. There are some tools that she has yet to find, but with continued top-notch training and development, she has the potential to be in the conversation as one of the top pin hitters in the 2022 class.
Raegan Boe – 2021 – Middle Blocker/Pin Hitter – Holmen – V-Hawk Xtreme 16 Adidas
Boe is athletic and very versatile with the ability to play anywhere in the front row, as well as defense. In the middle she can move quickly laterally, but can also put a big block up. Boe has a lot of potential and a high ceiling. If she continuous with top training, Boe has the tools to be a college level player with her ability to play multiple front row positions, along with having a fast arm swing and good timing.
Zoee Pond – 2021 – 5’9 – Right Side – Monroe – Capital 16 Navy
Pond was a consistent force for Capital all weekend. She is athletic, aggressive, and plays with zero fear. Pond is the type of player who is always keeping her team in the game. She is solid in serve- receive and lethal attacking out of the front row or back court with a fast swing, deep attack, and smart tips. Pond will be the go-to player for Monroe on the right side in the Fall.
