As part of the updated rankings, here is a look at a handful of the top unsigned and uncommitted seniors in Nebraska. Every year there are hidden gems that do not commit to schools until late in their senior year. According to our updated rankings, here are the 10 best players left uncommitted.
Gracie Gokie, 5’10, Setter, Lincoln Pius X
Let’s put it this way, if Gokie wanted to play in college, should could have been committed a very long time ago, but it’s starting to look as though that is not the case. As a two-year starter for Lincoln Pius X, she was a steady force for the Thunderbolts and had 2,188 assists (10.4 per set) over the last two years and her athleticism is pretty much second-to-none among setters in the state.
Sophia Moes, 5’2, Libero, Omaha Marian
I don’t want to say that Moes never really got a chance to shine at Omaha Marian over the past three year, but the bottom line is that she didn’t. Despite being one of the quickest, most steady defenders in the state, Marian’s back row was shuffled around more than a deck of cards at a poker tournament during her past three seasons. Despite that. during her three varsity seasons with the Crusaders she had 82 ace serves, 665 digs, 67 assists and 749 serve receptions.
Kayla Hayes, 6’2, OH/MH, Freeman
Hayes has been one of the most feared attackers at the smaller-school level in Nebraska since her freshman year when she had 271 kills and a .338 hitting percentage. She kept getting more dominant as time passed, and despite plenty of interest from local colleges, Hayes has either been in no hurry to make a decision or is content not playing in college. Either way, there is no denying her talent and potential.
Logan Connealy, 6’0, OH, Elkhorn South
Connealy, I’ve been told, is not during a college volleyball career. A great athlete that brings a strong presence to the court and the net, the Elkhorn South senior has battled injuries over the past couple years, but when she was healthy she was incredibly hard to stop. As a four-year starter for the Storm, Connealy finished with 863 kills, 237 blocks and 728 digs.
Baylie Shearer, 5’7, Setter, Gretna
I would take Shearer on my team any day. Her height means she would have to set in a two-setter offense in college, but all you need to know about her grit and ability is this: During a match this past fall against eventual state-champion Millard North, Shearer collided with a teammate tracking down a ball and broke off a portion of one of her front teeth. They found the broken piece, Shearer went to the locker room briefly then came back out to play the fifth set. She’s tough as nails.
Jada Cattau, 5’9, OH, Hartington Cedar Catholic
Cattau’s explosiveness and power on the outside played a huge role in the success Hartington Cedar Catholic has had in recent years. She doesn’t have ideal size and her back row might not play right away in college, but she has the potential to help NAIA and 2-year programs.
Carsyn Ostrad, 5’8, Setter, Nebraska Christian
The daughter of a coach, Ostrad is just flat-out a volleyball player who can do a little of everything on the court. In her career she finished with 2,896 assists, 146 ace serves, 786 digs and 533 kills. Two of her sisters play at Hastings College.
Logan Poppe, 5’10, OH, Doniphan-Trumbull
An athletic attacker, Poppe was a four-year starter for Doniphan-Trumbull and finished with 746 kills, 81 blocks and 830 digs during her career. She would likely need a year or two of seasoning at the NAIA level, but could certainly help a program.
Alexis Mishou, 5’9, Setter, Kearney
Technically, Mishou is committed but she still deserves to be mention in this list. The setter from Kearney is headed to Hastings College to play basketball, but she could have just as easily been a volleyball recruit had she not gone to the dark side (basketball …. lol). She had 2,333 assists, 874 digs and 151 kills in her career at Kearney and was a fierce and tough competitor.
Emma Altman, 5’5, Libero, Millard North
At last check, Altman was planning to go to nursing school in Minnesota and not play college volleyball, but she sure could if she wanted. In her two years at Millard North, she had 873 digs and 54 aces and collected a gold and silver medal. As a freshman, she was on the Skutt Catholic varsity team that won state.
