In an announcement last week, Young was named the interim athletic director at Central CC after it announced the retirement of athletic director Jack Gutierrez following 39 years of service.
CCC has also announced the appointment of volleyball coach Mary Young as interim athletic director.
Gutierrez will officially retire on May 31. Young will take over as interim athletic director on June 1.
In a related move, Central CC announced the hiring of Abby Pollart yesterday to replace Young.
The Central Community College athletics department is pleased to announce the appointment of Caitlin Fehringer (pictured left) as softball coach and Abby Pollart (pictured right) as volleyball coach.
Fehringer takes the reigns from Jack Gutierrez, who announced his retirement last week after 39 years with the CCC athletic department. Pollart replaces Mary Young, who was named interim athletic director succeeding Gutierrez.
Pollart brings a wealth of volleyball coaching experience from multiple institutions, including a stint as the interim head coach at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for part of the 2016-17 season. Since then, she has served as an assistant volleyball coach at Concordia University in Seward and at the University of Mary in North Dakota.
“I am very honored to be appointed as head volleyball coach for Central Community College,” Pollart said in a statement released by the school. “The community college system holds a special place in my heart and I’m excited to build upon the incredible program Mary Young has built over the last 24 years. I couldn’t help but feel at home on the CCC campus and in the Columbus community. I look forward to getting to know the team, building relationships and helping them become better people as they grow during their two years at CCC.”
Young will not be easy to replace on the bench or in the volleyball community at large. She turned the school into one of the biggest two-year college powerhouses in the nation.
Young is a past president of the NJCAA Coaches Association and is currently serving as the Region IX women’s director and on the NJCAA Board of Regents. Outside of athletics, Young has served CCC in several capacities over the past two decades including instructor, advisor and admissions director. She began her academic pursuits at the Columbus Campus when it was called Central Community College-Platte Campus, earning her AA in biology before transferring to the University of South Dakota. Young later earned a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
“I am humbled and excited to continue to work with CCC athletics as the interim athletic director,” Young said in a school statement. “I look forward to building on the great foundation that has been established at Central Community College and we will continue to offer tremendous opportunities for our student-athletes to develop while on their educational and athletic journey.”
