The list is compiled of only 20 young athletes from all over the country who participate in club volleyball as part of the JVA. The honor is given to players who “are at the top of their class, and along with academic excellence, they exemplify outstanding volleyball performance, leadership, responsibility, and selflessness.”
Henderson was nominated by her club director because of her commitment, grind, and ability to succeed as a student athlete. She is is junior athlete at Union Grove High School. The 5’6” libero was a team leader in digs and service aces. They finished third in the Southern Lake conference last year and only will graduate one player from that roster. Henderson’s a key component for not only their defense but serve receive. She averaged 13.5 receptions per match. Even against the best servers her average for serve receive errors was 0.4 per match. Eliminating errors helped her team stay close in matches with better teams.
She plays on the Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball Club (WJV) 17 Elite team. They are a strong team who placed in the top 25 at the JVA World Challenge (Premier Division.) And were also strong competition at St Louis Pres. Fest. In June they will travel to Orlando for the AAU Nationals. While there, Kelsey will get to be a part of an awards banquet that honors her and the other 19 AthLeaders.
The list is made up of 20 freshman, sophomores, and juniors from all over the country and a handful of clubs. Henderson is the only athlete to represent Wisconsin this year. Neighboring states have a few more:
Minnesota – Lizzie Holscher – 2020 Libero/Defense Specialist; MN Select Volleyball Club in Maple Grove, MN
Illinois – Priya Dave – 2020 Setter. Club Fusion Volleyball; in Batavia, IL
–Sisy Chen – 2021 Middle Blocker. Chicago Elite;in Chicago,IL
–Jordan Quinones – 2021 Middle Blocker. Chicago Elite in Chicago, IL
–Lily Summers – 2021 Outside Hitter. Club 1 VBC; in Plainfield, IL
–Lauren Green – 2022 Outside Hitter. Sports Performance; in Aurora, IL
–Jenna Kuhny – 2022 Libero/Defense Specialist. Sports Performance; in Aurora, IL
Illinois had more athletes than any other state. Perhaps this will change as more teams join and become aware of the JVA awards. Until then, Kelsey will represent the state well as one of the nations premiere student athletes. With college level ambitions we know this is not the last we will hear about this talented, scholarly athlete.
