Continue ReadingNebraska teams were in full force in Des Moines this past weekend for the JVA Midwest Challenge with teams out of the Upper Midwest. However, for Nebraska teams the trip on I80 and back to Des Moines proved to be a successful one with VCNebraska 17 Elite taking the title in the 18s division and Nebraska Juniors 16 Black taking the championship in 16 Open with other plenty of top five finishes.
I got a full dose of the morning sessions which was mostly the 17s and 18s and Nebraska had a very impressive showing on teams within the state and on clubs in Iowa as well.
Halle Theis – Nebraska Juniors 17 Black – Outside Hitter
Theis was impressive all around Saturday morning for 17 Black. A six rotation outside hitter with a variety of shots in her repertoire, Theis was a big time scorer who was a threat in the front and backrow. Definitely a solid prospect at the next level that can be used in a variety of ways to put a pass on point or score points in key situations.
Halle Theis really impressive pin for @NEBJRSVB1 – she can do a little bit of everything, solid all around with a high IQ and huge arm! pic.twitter.com/OJyEq5krka

Lauren Taubenheim – Nebraska Juniors 17 Black – Outside Hitter
17 Black always had a big time scoring threat from the pin, an eraser if they were ever out of system. Taubenheim has a bit of a different style to her game than Theis. Long, athletic, Taubenheim puts up a big block, contacts high, and really covers her ground in the backrow.

Tria McClean – Nebraska Elite 17 Frost – Setter
Absolutely great hands and command of the offense. McClean moves extremely well on the court and is always in a position to put the ball in place for her hitters to terminate. When McClean is in the front row she is definitely a scoring threat where she has the physicality at the net to put a second contact to the floor and win a joust. She has plenty of offensive weapons, but can really take control of the game herself.
Josie Reid – MVP 17 Blue (Sioux City) – Middle Blocker
MVP is led by two big arms on the pin in Kenzie Foley and Jazlin De Haan from Iowa, but Reid is a really dynamic middle from Ponca, Nebraska. Reid can put up a really solid block and is pretty offensive with the ability to hit a variety of shots. MVP took home the title after not even being favored to make it out of their pool. Reid is from the Class of 2021 playing up and is definitely one to keep tabs on.
Sam Steele – River City 18 Navy – Libero
Steele is a recent commit to Ohio and it was pretty quick to see the talent and athleticism from Steele who is just has the gritty competitiveness about her. River City 18 Navy finished in the top ten and also had attacker Maggie Madej make a big impact at the net as well.
Eliza Kawa – Club Legacy 17 REN – Outside Hitter
Kawa was so effective when they played MVP in their crossover and gave MVP a pretty big scare until a late surge. Kawa was crafty being able to pain the deep corner with her shots and also using the block to her advantage as well.
Lauren Anderson – Nebraska Juniors 17 Red – Setter
Anderson can put up a nice ball. She ran the show for Nebraska Juniors 17 Red with some of her go to targets being Lauren Feely on the slide or Elizabeth Stacy on the pin.
Mayah Delgado-Walker – Nebraska Elite 17 Frost – Right Side
I knew I had seen Delgado-Walker play, the right side who could really cause a mismatch for the opposing line and pound the line or go high hands/top spin/cross court. Her high school team, Omaha Duchense Academy always is a big time contender at the Wisconsin Badger Team Camp, which I’ve covered last year, where they defeated some of the top teams in Wisconsin and Illinois before losing to Champlin Park, Minnesota who would go onto win the largest class in Minnesota.
Other Notables:

Tria McClean – Outside HItter – Nebraska Elite 17 Frost
Saige Christo – Libero – Nebraska Juniors 17 Black
Katherine Maser – Setter – Nebraska Juniors 17 Black
Katherine Mendick – Middle Blocker – Club Legacy
