Michigan was well represented in the event and had four teams vying for the Open National Championship.
In the end, Legacy 14-Elite had the top performance out of the state, finishing tied for fifth by reaching the gold bracket quarterfinals.
FaR Out 14 Black placed tied for 13th over the event while Michigan Elite 14 Mizuno was 31st and TeamD 14-Red placed tied for 34th.
Legacy really came out hot, as it won its first six matches of the event without dropping a set. 14-Elite would go 9-0 entering the gold bracket, but was edged in a classic against Vaqueras 14 Julio by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 16-14. Asics KIVA 14 Red would walk away with the championship in the end.
Outside hitter Harper Murray really shined throughout the event, earning herself Open All-American honors. The 6-1 outside looks like she will fit right in with Ann Arbor Skyline in the future, following in the footsteps of 2020 hitter Kendall Murray, her sister.
Rebecca Apsey was a great compliment for Murray on the right side, giving Legacy a great 1-2 punch to work with at the net. Erin Kline, the team’s setter, was able to consistently feed both hitters in the right spots and kept the opposing teams guessing. Apsey is another talented player from the Birmingham area while Kline hails from Northville.
FaR Out 14 Black took some bumps along the way, going 3-7 throughout the weekend, but played some of the best in the field competitively and reached the 14 Open consolation bracket before falling to Triangle 14 Black by scores of 26-24, 27-25.
Michigan Elite 14 Mizuno was 5-7 for the event, but surged in the final day to reach the sapphire bracket finals. There, it was edged by Carolina UVC 14 Premier, 25-20, 25-21. Along the way to the final, Michigan Elite was able to top TeamD 14-Red 25-17, 25-13.
