The camp brings together 18 of the top teams in the state in each division – a total of 54 for the camp as a whole – and there is always a lot to watch and a lot to learn over those days. Each division is broken into two pools. All teams in the same pool play each other, with the top five teams in each pool advancing to a championship pool. It’s not easy to explain, but the winning team is the team that finishes with the best record against the other teams in the championship pool over the course of the tournament.
Here are the pools for the C2 division.
Pool A
Alma
Arcadia-Loup City
Summerland (Ewing-Clearwater-Orchard)
Diller-Odell
Doniphan-Trumbull
Elm Creek
Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family
Mead
Stanton
Pool B
Battle Creek
Centennial
Clarkson-Leigh
Falls City Sacred Heart
Fillmore Central
Hartington Cedar Catholic
Hastings St. Cecilia
South Loup
Southern Valley
Here is a look at my five things to watch in the Class C2 division of the Top 10 Camp.
1.) Things are going to look much, much different as a whole in C2 this season. Hartington CC has dropped down to D1, Grand Island Central Catholic has dropped down to C2. After being one of the top teams in the class the past four years, Stanton loses a ton of talent. Superior had a key piece to its team move to Lincoln. Blue Hill lost a lot of pieces as well. So, who is going to reveal themselves as a C2 title contender this week?
2.) Tria McLean of Battle Creek is one of the top setters in the state and is an Ohio University recruit. The Braves lost to Stanton in the C2 quarterfinals last year, but this year Battle Creek moves up to C1. This will be my first chance to watch McLean in a high school environment and it at all possible, you should try and watch her play as well. She’s a phenomenal athlete.
3.) How will Summerland look? It was a little weird last fall when Ewing coach Suz Funk spent a portion of her post-match press conference after losing to BDS in the D2 finals talking about the advantage BDS had being a school from three communities compared to Ewing being its own community/school despite the fact that the enrollment figures were the same. Fast forward a few months and now Ewing is part of a three-community program and has been bumped up to C2. A lot of the talent from Ewing is back, but for me, it all boils down to how a group that has experienced a lot of success like the kids from Ewing mesh with kids from Clearwater and Orchard, which frankly, has not had any success. How that dynamic comes together will be interesting to watch.,
4.) Halle Theis, a Regis University recruit, and Fillmore Central will be fun to watch. The Panthers pretty much bring back the entire squad from last year that went 17-10 and lost to Thayer Central in district play. Class C2 is basically Grand Island CC’s to lose, but Fillmore Central should be right in the thick of things this fall.
5.) Diller-Odell might be playing in the C2 division this week, but the Griffins will be in Class D1 this fall and they are my pick to be the team that walks off the Bob Devaney Sports Complex court as champions this November. After going 26-7 and losing to Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family in the state quarterfinals last year, the Griffins return basically everyone, including Iowa State setter recruit Addison Heidemann and big-time middles Mackenzie Vitosh and Emily Swanson.
