In the end, though, the Hawkettes were able to steady themselves and earn the title.
In the championship portion of the tournament, Hastings St. Cecilia had dropped just one set heading into the the match with Diller-Odell while the Griffins had dropped three, meaning Diller-Odell had to sweep the Hawkettes to win.
Diller-Odell then came out and completely dominated the first set, winning 25-16. The second set was tight all the way, but Hastings St. Cecilia was able to pull away late and win 25-23 and clinch the title.
Senior Tori Thomas was her usual dominating self for Hastings St. Cecilia, as was setter Makenna Asher. but it was the balanced attack that included Chloe McCauley, Emma Schneider, Katharine Hamburger, Erin Sheehy, Jill Parr and 6’2 sophomore lefty Addie Kirkegaard that made the Hawkettes so tough to beat. It also helps having Alan VanCura on the bench.
While Hastings St. Cecilia showed it is going to be a legitimate threat in Class C-2 this year, Diller-Odell sure looked every bit the part of a 2019 state champion in Class D-1. Iowa State recruit Addison Heidemann is absolutely the real deal and probably the best setter in the state right now. Mackenzie Vitosh and Emily Swanson are going to give teams fits in the middle this year and how many Class D-1 teams will be able to put up a block to stop the Griffins’ outside hitters of 5’11 sophomore Madelyn Meyerle and 6’1 freshman Karli Heidemann? The answer is none. Kyleigh Barnts, Melina Kostal, Ava Lovitt, Madeline Swanson and Elecea Saathoff give the Griffins the deepest and most talented roster in Class D this year.
