Outside hitters may get a bulk of the swings, they also may have some blasts that get the team pumped up, the student section roaring, and plenty of stats to fill the lineup. However, at the FVA Fall Classic on Tuesday, there are going to be some middle blockers who are working from pin to pin, then transitioning to be available to terminate. A big block from a middle, or a zone four tip out can be a major boost on any court. Here are a few middle blockers to take note of who will be kicking off their season in Fond du Lac for the FVA Fall Classic.
Carlee Doering and Maddie Schreiber – Kimberly
Carlee Doering celebrating against Appleton North in 2018.Doering is a Senior who has quietly made her way to one of the top middle blockers in the conference with a quick arm swing and her ability to see the whole court. She can also move quickly from pin to pin to make sure the block is closed and let the rest of the defense get the Makers in system. Schreiber is one of the top basketball players in Wisconsin for the Class of 2021. Last season she was able to play in the state tournament for volleyball and basketball for Kimberly. Extremely quick and dynamic, Schreiber uses her athleticism to create plenty of point scoring opportunities (this line can be used for her in volleyball and basketball).
Lauren Richards – Appleton West
Richards has committed to Michigan Tech. An All FVA player, Richards has been able to play a variety of positions, but the middle is where she is able to use her quick hops and snap of an arm swing to really do some damage. In 2018, Richards had nearly 250 kills with a hitting efficiency over .400.
Natalie Johanknecht and Randi Wellhoefer – Oshkosh West
The Wildcats have a really talented Junior class that features two middles who are extremely dynamic in Johanknecht and Wellhoefer, outside hitter Eva Beeth and setter, Morgan Yenter. Johanknecht is long, athletic and jumps like a deer. She can hit a variety of tempos and finds a way to score points as well as make a presence defensively at the net. Wellhoefer led the Wildcats in kills last year and plays well above the net. This combo has plenty of experience and will be looking to make an early impact on the 2019 season.
Lauren Richards of Appleton WestLivvie Asare and Berkley Mischler – Appleton North
Asare is a 6’0 Senior who plays with a high IQ, finding the open spot and seeing the deep corners. Extremely efficient, Asare is also able to make a statement with her block. Mischler is the firey Sophomore who brings a big block with her ability to read the opposite side of the net and really press to take away shots from the middle or outside. The combination of these two working with their veteran setters in Taylor Vanden Berg and Brooke Bolwerk will be key to a quick start for North.
Macy McGlone – Hortonville
Hortonville has always had a strong presence in the middle and McGlone, a Division 1 basketball commit to UW-Milwaukee is no different. McGlone plays well above the net and can make something happen out of nothing. With her all-around athleticism, she can take over the net and be a threat offensively and defensively.
