Continue ReadingThe Charger Challenge was full of top players as well as “Unsung” Heroes that led to success for multiple teams. Success is always defined in various ways. It could be one big win that defined the win or maybe even progressively getting better – the “Growth Mindset”. Here are the top performers named by the coaches and a few more that caught our eye throughout the weekend.
Charger Challenge All-Tournament Team (Ballots were handed out to all coaches)
*MVP – Taylor Alden – Oconomowoc
Tayler AldenHaving a left handed setter as physical and athletic as Alden is rare, not just in this area, but anywhere. Alden has a knack for knowing when to swing, set, and take control. This weekend was no different as the future Northern Iowa recruit was putting stress on the defense from all positions on the court. With her future coach in Assistant Coach Kim Davis from Northern Iowa in attendance (UNI was playing at Marquette), Alden definitely showed why she is one of the top athletes in her class.
Aubrey Hamilton – Arrowhead
So strong and solid, Hamilton just never seems to be phased. When Arrowhead is in system and she is able to get a clean set out to the pin – game over. With a contact point that is over the block and the ability to pass to attack from anywhere on the court, she is tough to track. The future Notre Dame recruit will be a key part to the Warhawks getting back to the Resch.
Mckenna Wucherer – Brookfield Central
The top Sophomore in the nation. Mckenna Wucherer is making a case for her self with the way she can terminate from a variety of angles. BC stubbed its toe a bit this weekend, but with a rigorous schedule they will have plenty of opportunities to see these top teams and Wucherer will be one team will target, however she will also be one taking the big swings and scoring for the Lancers.
Rachel Roberts – DSHA
Roberts represents what DSHA is all about. Being efficient, smart, and never breaking down. The Dashers use a total team effort to just wear out teams. They may not have the firepower that others have, but they just find a way to keep the ball off the floor and play really solid defense. Roberts swings out of the right side when she’s in the front row and will set in the backrow. Like most of these athletes for DSHA, she is the total all-around player.
Brianna Cantrell – Appleton North
All the top Sophomores came to play this past weekend with Cantrell, Wucherer, Kaminski, Daugherty, Jankowski, ok the list goes on. Cantrell has such a live arm and a big approach. Her attack angles vary and she is starting to learn a variety of shots during the right situation. She is a key point scorer for North, with the ability to take over a mathc.
Karissa Kaminksi – Howards Grove
Karissa Kaminski #6Firey! Kaminski plays with intensity, energy, and a ton of fire where she is doing it all in six rotations. Kaminski has experience setting, will head to Dayton as a libero, and is currently one of the top outside hitters in Division 3. Only a Sophomore, Kaminski plays with experience and confidence as a key piece to the early success of HG.
Maddie Siedenburg – Kettle Moraine
Kettle Moraine showed what it can do after defeating Arrowhead in a challenge match to get into gold. Siedenburg is an outside who has all the shots in the book and can be quite an eraser from the outside or the backrow. She makes a solid option for her sister, Rebecca Siedenburg who is one of the setters for KM.
Maleah Howe – Oconomowoc
What a difference a year makes. As a Freshman last year, Howe had the big swing and could score points, but this year there is just a different look to her body language. Confidence, hunger, and intensity. She wants the ball in big moments and definitely had key points for Ocon in their run to the title.
Emily Banitt – River Falls
Sometimes the progression from a Junior to Senior year is where there aren’t a whole lot of gains made. Not for Emily Banitt, she is jumping higher and putting more pace on the ball than she has ever done before. Banitt was in the same facility as her future teammate, KJ McNabb of Sun Prairie where both of these athletes are touching ten feet and are a threat to score anywhere on the court – electric to watch!
Sydney PaulsonSydney Paulson – West Bend West
The lefty! Paulson has been a key member of West Bend West so far this season with a quick snap on a left handed swing on the right side. She will be heading to Winona State after her high school where she will compete in the NSIC (Divison 2), where fellow teammate will be competing as well in Madelyn Rettler who is heading to Upper Iowa.
Brooke Anderson – Kimberly
Anderson has always been a steady defensive specialist for Kimberly, but the Junior now is owning the libero spot for the Papermakers. With returning libero, Lauren Elliott, out with an injury, Anderson is running the backcourt playing extremely solid in serve receive and can provide a solid first contact to get the Makers in system.
