The awkard first days of going through rules and procedure and of course taking the occasional pretest. As the second week begins in the season we’ve gotten a little taste of what will be sure to see teams takes turns at the top of the rankings, upsets, big dual matches during the week, and a late October/early November full of fireworks. In honor of the first week of school in Wisconsin, here is a little pretest to head into the year.
Under/Over: The Division 1 State Champion Will Have 5.5 losses
Division 1 is legit with a large number of teams who are just going to beat up on each other all season. Brookfield Central defeated Arrowhead to win the Joust, but these two teams could see each other up to three more times in tournaments as well as seeing each other in the sectionals. Behind these two squads are the likes of Burlington, Appleton North, Oconomowoc, and more. Even teams within their own conference pose a legit threat each night they come onto the court. A team like River Falls who came into the state tournament undefeated two years ago have really beefed up their schedule competing in the Southwest Minnesota Challenge, in a 32 team tournament with some of the top teams in Minnesota. They will also be at the Charger Rally and another top tournament with teams out of the Twin Cities Metro.
True/False: Catholic Central is most likely to repeat compared to the other state champions in D1-D3.
The Hilltoppers stole the show from Clayton last year to take the Division 4 state title last year. They have the experience and return six rotation outside Sammie Seib who just finds a way to score points and is extremely solid in the backrow. D3 will have a new state champion with Lake Country Lutheran moving up to Division 2, but so far their defense and clean offensive play has them as a legit contender to make a run for a state two title. And as always….never count out Burlington.
Alyna Ritter of LCL.Over/Under – Eight of the 20 teams that advance to the state tournament in all classes will be unranked.
There will be some regions that could have as many as 5 ranked teams beat up on each other before the state tournament. Other regions have none. There will always be the unranked team that goes on a hot streak to make some noise heading into the state tournament. Last year Waukesha West got hot at the right time, avenging some early season losses to advance to the state tournament and get to the final four.
True/False: A Final Four finisher at the Charger Rally will win a state title.
The Charger Rally is the top tournament in the state with ranked teams from all Divisions. However, last year the top two teams in Arrowhead and River Falls fell short of making the state finals. Burlington, East Troy, Lake Country Lutheran, and Catholic Central didn’t even compete in the tournament but brought home the gold ball.
True/False: A Madison area school will win a state title.
These are all extremely bold statements I’m making here. However, I don’t think this is outlandish with the Madison area being extremely deep this year. In Division 1, Sun Prairie looks extremely strong with an experienced line up, they are so athletic, and will have a schedule that will prepare them for key matches come postseason. Division 2 gets dangerous, which I’m going to consider Section 3 to be the Madison are. Here are some teams who are going to be really competitive out of this section: Edgewood, McFarland, Mount Horeb, Platteville, East Troy, Lake Country Lutheran, Lakeside Lutheran, and Lake Mills. What? All of these teams have been to the state tournament recently, have won state titles recently, and are capable of getting back to Green Bay. Yikes. In D3, Waterloo is going to be a front runner, but another team in Wisconsin Heights has been off to strong start as well.
Pencils down, let the games continue!
