In a matter of two weeks, some teams could potentially play 12-15 matches. Have a tough stretch, a team who is sick (because it seems all athletes get sick at the same time), or battling through injuries – this is a real tough part of the schedule. Oh, and lets throw in some homecoming activities and the first round of tests being a month into school – I digress. With this weekend, there could be some names that could really take over, helping their team to a deep run at the Sprawl.
Julia Treichel and Natalie Tesch – Wisconsin Lutheran
Julia TreichelTreichel is so explosive from the outside and just has contagious energy while playing. Tesch is the swiss army knife lefty who can score points from anywhere in the front row (including the middle) and has also seen some time setting. This team was able to knock off Brookfield Central last weekend and definitely has the ability to battle with the big dogs no matter what round they are in.
Courtney Pearson – Kimberly
Pearson tore her ACL back in December and was cleared to play this summer. Each time out on the court, she seems to get strong and grow in confidence. Kimberly is heading into the weekend a little banged up, but Pearson will be a key part of the puzzle to score a lot of points. A six rotation outside who can score from multiple spots on the court.
Olivia Dir and Karlee Lois – Union Grove
Dir and Lois have played club together at Wisconsin Juniors and both are heading to strong NCAA D2 programs with Dir heading to Northwest Missouri State and Lois to Wheeling Jesuit (WV). Lois is a dynamic left-handed setter who can do it all, but she does pose an extra threat with being able to attack on demand. Dir is the ultimate ball control outside with a beach background with the mix of shots to score points in various ways.
Sam NaberSam Naber – Burlington
Yes, a libero can take over a game. We’ve seen Naber take over a game, we’ve seen her take over a tournament. Gritty, big time gamer, and just solid all the way around Naber controls a defense that is one of the bests in the state that have Amanda Viel and Mackenzie Leach in the backrow as well. Burlington has the defense to dig the likes of the big hitters they will see in this tournament.
Alayna Westenberg – Watertown
Watertown is 33-1. They’ve played a tough early schedule, winning a lot of really close games. They are coming in as the defending champions of the Sprawl, but still have a bitter taste from their sectional final loss to Oconomowoc last season. Westenberg is back with a heavy swing where she can split the block or use a mix of shots to score points. She will be joined by a solid cast of athletes that also includes Izzy Schauer setting and is committed to Belmont in Nashville, TN.
