In Class A, Papillion-LaVista and Elkhorn South continue to be well ahead of everyone else. Lincoln Pius X moves up to #3 and #4 Millard North could be getting McKenna Ruch back in the coming week or two, which would definitely be a big boost for the defending Class A champs.
The big battle right now in Class A is for the teams trying to secure one of the top seven seeds in the postseason, thereby securing home-court advantage in district play. This season, more than any in recent history, is so deep in Class A that the real danger is falling below #10 in the wild card rankings, which would put you up against one of the big four in the class – Papio, Elkhorn South, Pius X and Millard North – and that’s a postseason date nobody wants.
In Class B, Lindsay Krause is back for Skutt Catholic and all she did in her first week was break the school record for kills in a match. The Nebraska recruit certainly changes the landscape of Class B, but it has been apparent for a while that #1 Waverly and #2 Skutt are on a whole different level than everyone else in the class. Watch out for Sidney, thought, which jumped up to #3 in the rankings. The Red Raiders played Waverly in a real competitive match over the weekend and they might be the wild card in the Class B title hunt.
Class C1 is proving to be deep beyond belief – but that seems to be the case every year in that class. Undefeated St. Paul has certainly distanced itself from the pack, but after the Wildcats and #2 Wahoo, the next nine or 10 teams in that class is pretty interchangeable.
Class C2 #1 Hastings St. Cecilia got its second win of the season over #2 Grand Island Central Catholic and the Hawkettes have got a firm grip on that top spot. Superior is back up to #3 after Thayer Central has stumbled lately. Look out for Mead, though, as we roll into late October. Not necessarily because the 13-0 Raiders could dethrone St. Cecilia from the top spot, but because they have a pretty soft schedule the rest of the way and are already #2 ahead of GICC and Superior in the NSAA wild card point totals, which could send some waves through the post-season seeding.
Diller-Odell is still on cruise control at 18-0 in D1, but there are some really good teams in this class like Pleasanton, Overton, Archbishop Bergan, etc., that have to be taken very seriously if the Griffins aren’t on their game. Maywood-Hayes Center – at 15-0 – is kind of laying in the woods out in the western part of the state as well.
Wynot is still undefeated and at the top of the Class D2 standings after having dropped just one set so far in 10 matches. We will find out just how good Wynot is when it travels to Class C1 Omaha Concordia this weekend for a best-of-five match.
