Catholic Central is returning a large core from their 2018 state championship team, but there are plenty of teams, especially in Northern Wisconsin who have been going back and forth all year. Who are the players leading their teams to the top? Who can we expect to keep an eye on during tournament time? Here is a glace at the top players leading the way in Division 4.
Sammie Seib – Catholic Central
Seib broke on to the scene last year when Catholic Central stormed the state tournament and defeated defending state champion Clayton enroute to Catholic Central earning the crown. So far this season, Seib has over 250 kills and 200 digs. The Hilltoppers have loaded up their schedule with opponents from D2 and D1 and are on a path to get back to the Resch to repeat 2018.
Dorci Walker – Columbus Catholic
The 2019 Columbus Catholic squad has been on a tear since last season with their sights set on a deep postseason run. Walker is only a Sophomore, but jumped on to the scene as one of the top Freshmen in 2018 and is continuing where she left off. The Dons are 25-6 and have an undefeated conference record. They will be in a traditionally tough section with the likes of Prentice and Newman Catholic.
Maggie Craker – McDonnell Central Catholic
Craker is one of the top all-around athletes in Division 4, and is currently leading the Macks as a setter. With over 400 assists, Craker is a flat out playmaker. From being able to defend in the backrow to making things happen to dish to a well-balanced attack, Craker also makes herself as a big presence at the net offensively and defensively. The top-ranked team in the Prep Dig D4 rankings will have to three other top ten teams in their section in Mercer, Clear Lake, and Gillman.
Olivia Burcaw – Prentice
Averaging five kills per set and over 300 kills on the season, Burcaw is a Junior outside hitter who has led Prentice to a 23-5 record. Burcaw has also racked up over 40 assists and just under 200 digs. Prentice has been neck and neck with top ten ranked Gillman all season and will continue to do battle and potentially see them come postseason.
Grace Gunseth – Gillman
Gillman has been led by a core of strong Seniors to lead them to some quality victories and a top ten ranking. Gunseth is leading the team in kills where she has teamed up with Evelyn Fryza, who has nearly 300 assists so far this season.
Julianna Rosen – Clear Lake
Clear Lake may be a surprise to some, but after seeing this team compete in the River Falls Summer League, the pieces are definitely there for the Warriors to make a postseason run in a rugged sectional. Rosen is 6’0 and extremely athletic where she has been leading the team with 142, which is nearly 3.5 per set. Clear Lake also has Senior setter Madison Zimmer leading the team with over 300 assists.
