Russell thrived throughout the 2019 regular-season, capturing the Floyd Central Invitational Tournament title. The Red Devils’ regular-season included 28 wins. After defeating rival Greenup County in the 63rd District Volleyball Tournament title match, Russell improved to 30-3. The Red Devils boast the best record among 16th Region volleyball teams and one of the best marks in the state.
Several players are teaming up to lead the Red Devils. Kate Ruggles (240 kills, 40 blocks, 31 aces, 64 aces), McKenna Barfield (211 kills, 69 blocks), Sadie Hill (104 kills, 20 blocks, 524 assists, 174 digs, 132 aces) and Madline Hill (317 digs, 63 aces) are among Russell’s leaders heading into the 16th Region Volleyball Tournament.
Russell County concluded the 2018 high school volleyball season 30-5. The Red Devils reached the semifinals of the 2018 16th Region Volleyball Tournament hosted by Fairview High School in Westwood. Rowan County eliminated Russell from the postseason in 2018, shutting out the Red Devils 3-0 in the 16th Region Semifinals.
Along with Russell and 63rd District runner-up Greenup County, the 2019 16th Region Volleyball Tournament includes West Carter, Boyd County, Fleming County, Ashland Blazer, Rowan County and East Carter. The Red Devils are set to face familiar foe Ashland Blazer in the quarterfinals of the 16th Region Volleyball Tournament at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
