With seeding meetings complete, there were going to be some big questions as to where teams were going to be seeded. The matchups are in place and we’ll see how long seeding can hold out throughout sectional play. Here are some bracket busters and the players who will be leading them.
Waukesha West (D1) – There is just something about this team that is kind of scary with their firepower that could give some team troubles. They
Anna Holland of Waukesha West.thrive in the position of being the underdog. Last year they were able to come out of the sectional after a midseason slump and beat conference rival Mukwonago to get to the Resch. The set up is similar to this upcoming postseason and with the power of Alexis Boling, the passing of Anna Holland, and the all-around play of Abby Fregien.
Sun Prairie (D1) – Sun Prairie has had some tough losses this year that were almost too close to call. The Cardinals still have plenty of athletes who have won in the spotlight with a new member of the 1,000 kill club, KJ McNabb along with attackers Payton Addink and Maggie Allaman. Josie Halbleib is always a weapon to score as well being long, athletic, and left-handed as a setter who can dish and attack. If seeding holds, they will face Verona who they lost to earlier this season and could face again this weekend in their conference tournament.
Kettle Moraine Lutheran (D2) and Catholic Memorial (D2) – KML and even Catholic Memorial have played a really rugged schedule and even though their win/loss record isn’t pretty, they have the experience playing against some big-time programs. They’ve taken their lumps, but they have been able to bounce back and have shown they can compete with some of the top teams in the state.
Newman Catholic (D4) – They are always there, no matter what their record is, they just have been big in the postseason and have made a habit of getting to the state tournament. At 17-17, they had a tough start to their season, but have been able to bounce back. Their three consecutive wins this past week were to Prentice, Auburndale, and Phillips – all highly competitive teams in D3 and D4.
Auburndale (D3) – At 25-9, Auburndale has a three seed on their side of the section, but have some big wins over Columbus Catholic and Stratford, which they could have a potential rematch with Stratford if seeding holds. Auburndale is led in kills by Senior Katie Helminiak with over 250, she is followed closely by fellow Senior Natalie Aue. The solid schedule by this squad will have them prepared to face the top teams in the area come tournament time.
Grantsburg (D3) – Having state tournament experience is invaluable come postseason having been in big games and have won big games just gives an extra edge. The Pirates have the two seed on their side and are 25-5 with a conference rival in St. Croix Falls as the one seed. Grantsburg already has two losses to St. Croix Falls and another matchup would provide quite the fireworks. Grantsburg will rely on rising Sophomore, Hanne Johnson who has nearly 300 kills on the season.
Mount Horeb (D2) – Section three in Division 2 is a state tournament in itself with the top teams from Southern Wisconsin. Mount Horeb is led by Elise Goetzinger, the future Kentucky Wildcat where if she has a chance to score, she is a major gamechanger. She is also a big presence with her block as well. Mount Horeb has suffered some really close losses, most recently to Waunakee who just grabbed a one seed in their D1 sectional. There are multiple teams in this bracket who have the weapons who can breakthrough to the state tournament. Will it be one of the former state champions in Lake Country Lutheran, East Troy, or Lakeside Lutheran? Or will a new name like a McFarland or Lake Mills. Either way, this is going to be so exciting to watch each night.
