A total of 16 teams are preparing to vie for a state title at Valley High School in Louisville, Nov. 8-10. The field for the 2019 KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament includes back-to-back state champion Assumption, which remains one of the top prep teams in the nation.
A look at the opening round matchups in the 2019 KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament, all of which will be played on Friday, Nov. 8, follows.
Henderson County vs. Greenwood (9:30 a.m.): Henderson County (23-12) has captured five consecutive 2nd Region titles and will be looking to carry momentum over into the state tournament. The champion out of the 5th Region, Greenwood (37-2) boasts one of the best records in the state.
North Oldham vs. Floyd Central (11 a.m.): Among the most talented teams in the state, North Oldham (26-8) has dominated throughout the postseason, not losing a set thus far. In its third year of existence, Floyd Central (30-7) is set to make a highly-anticipated debut in the KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament.
Assumption vs. Breathitt County (12:30 p.m.): National powerhouse Assumption (32-7) is looking to claim its third straight state title. Rylee Rader and Anna DeBeer lead state tournament favorite Assumption. Breathitt County (26-9), the champion out of the 14th Region, has the tough task of facing the Rockets.
Mercy vs. Elizabethtown (2 p.m.): Ranked second behind Assumption, Mercy (33-6) is another state title contender. The Jaguars will meet 5th Region champion Elizabethtown (35-3) in the opening round of the KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament. The Jaguars and Panthers have combined to record nearly 70 wins.
Notre Dame vs. McCracken County (3:30 p.m.): The Pandas (28-11) are no strangers to success on the court and are playing well in the latest postseason. Northern Kentucky-based Notre Dame will face 1st Region champion McCracken County (32-8), an accomplished program from the far Western portion of the state.
Campbell County vs. Owensboro Catholic (5 p.m.): After knocking off 10th Region favorite Harrison County in the semifinals, Campbell County (20-15) went on to win a title. Now, Campbell County must face 3rd Region champion Owensboro Catholic (26-10), which outlasted Breckinridge County 3-2 to win a regional crown.
West Jessamine vs. Henry Clay (6:30 p.m.): Two Central Kentucky squads will meet as West Jessamine (26-14) and Henry Clay (25-15) battle it out in the opening round of the KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament. Henry Clay shut out West Jessamine 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-15) when the two teams met on October 9.
Rowan County vs. Corbin (8 p.m.): After knocking off both Russell and Boyd County in the 16th Region, Rowan County (31-4) carries some momentum into a KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament match against Corbin. The 12th Region champion, Corbin has played its best in the second half of the 2019 season.
