After finishing 3rd at state last season with a second round loss to Lincoln Lutheran, the St. Paul Wildcats return to state for the second consecutive year, fifth time in school history. They face #8 seed Battle Creek (28-5) in the first round on Thursday at 1:30 at Lincoln North Star.
Breezing through the season, St Paul won the Lexington, Gothenburg, Elkhorn Valley, Wisner-Pilger, and LouPlatte Conference tournaments. Now they want to go “One Step Farther” and beat the school record of wins in a season which was set last year at 35. Under coach Matt Koehn-Fairbanks, the Wildcats are 126-12 the last four years.
Losing some key players to graduation, the Wildcats still returned 10 letterwinners and 6 starters this season. 2018 Class C-1 2nd Team All-State junior libero Paige Lukasiewicz controls the back row with senior Brooke Poppert and junior Josie Jakubowski in the front. Sophomore Olivia Poppert took over the reigns as setter in a 5-1 system.
Opponents of St. Paul can expect a tough serve pass game that allows them to run in system regularly. Finding the seams for a high hitting percentage against St. Paul will be a challenge.
The competitive spirit will be high in Lincoln this weekend! But, really, it all comes down to these young ladies being great stewards of the sport and we appreciate them for that. Volleyball proves to be a big part of their life, but read on and you might learn a little more about these athletes. Their ever-thinking minds are amazing!
