MITCHELL SEGGERMAN, HIGH FLYERS VBC
Our first interview this year on players from the boys High Flyers VBC 18’s team is Mitchell Seggerman. The 6’5” senior outside hitter from Sioux City, Iowa attends Siouxland Christian High School. He is the son of Mike and Sue Seggerman and has a younger sister, Sydney (16), who also plays volleyball. This is Mitchell’s second year of club volleyball. He travels 128 miles and 2 hours 14 minutes to attend practices with the High Flyers in Lincoln.
Why did you start playing volleyball?
My mom was a coach when I was little and I would always be in the gym bumping a ball around with her and then my love for the game grew from there!
Favorite drill in practice
I would say my favorite thing to do in practice would be to scrimmage
Least favorite drill in practice
All of the warmups that Greg makes us do… I know they’re good for us in the long run but I would rather be doing something else lol
Comment on team and teammates
This year’s team is a lot of fun. I have a special connection with each one of the guys individually and I feel like we all mesh pretty well as a group too. My setter Clayton and I have been connecting a lot more so far this season and I can’t wait to see how well we work together for the rest of this season. I think this will be a great year for us and I can’t wait to watch all of us grow together throughout the year!
What do you see as the biggest difference in boys and girls volleyball?
I think the biggest difference I see between boys and girls volleyball would be the pace of the game. The boys’ game is a lot quicker than the girls.
Do you help with your high school girls’ team?
Yes, I do help with my girls’ team at school. I’ve been the team manager since my freshman year and I owe a lot to coach Don Craig for bringing me in and letting me help out with them every day during the season.
Team outlook for 2020 Season
I think that this year will be a fun year to watch everyone grow in the sport that we have all learned to love so much. I think there are going to be big things happening on the court for us this season and I can’t wait to watch them unfold!
Any ideas on growing the sport of volleyball for boys in Nebraska?
I just don’t think a lot of people in Nebraska know about boys playing volleyball. It’s hard to even find enough guys that want to play sometimes. I think that just putting the word out there and showing to people that volleyball isn’t just a girls’ sport could be huge! The High Flyers have been around for a long time and I’ve been playing for quite a while but I had never heard about the High Flyers until last year! It just goes to show that guys are playing the sport, but they just don’t know of anywhere to play it! If we do a better job of putting the word out there for people to see I think a lot more guys would be interested in playing!
Do you plan to play volleyball in college?
Yes
Have you been recruited? Committed?
I have not yet committed but I am being recruited!
What opportunities has High Flyers given to you? me/what doors have been opened since playing for them?
I would first say that I have been given an opportunity to play with other boys on a competitive level all over the country. When I first came to the High Flyers I was welcomed with open arms by Greg, Nancy, and Jack and they have opened so many doors for me in the sense of recruiting and talking to coaches that are interested in me playing in college. Playing for the High Flyers has given me friends that will last a lifetime and memories that I cherish forever. I am so thankful to everyone that has helped me get to where I am today and I know none of it would have been possible without playing for the High Flyers! I can’t want to see what this final season has to offer and to make more memories along the way!
Mitch came to the High Flyers in 2018 with solid basic skills to go with his size and speed and we feel fortunate to be able to help him accelerate his development, compete, and elevate to the next level. He is very coachable and has been eager to learn and adapt to the faster tempo of the High Flyers style of play. Mitch has an easy-going personality that people just naturally gravitate towards, which, along with his strong volleyball skills, makes him a strong leader & good teammate both on and off the court.
In 2019 Mitch had to work through injury which made him tougher mentally, but he still managed to attract the attention of several Division I/II schools. Mitch is our primary passer and an offensive threat hitting at either pin and from the back row. He is a true six-skilled player that can take control of a match from anywhere on the court, so we are looking for big things in 2020, and should be an exciting year.
