With a collection of talent largely coming from the offshoots of I-75, Arsenal will bring a lot of motivated talent to the court this club season, looking to prove they belong with anyone else they face.
Here’s a closer look at the Elite squads for Arsenal in 2020.
U18 ELITE
This team is coached by Jackie Clark and will be getting its 2020 season started this weekend in Power League play. U18 Elite has four Class of 2021 members and the rest are 2020 grads. Defense and passing will be a strength for this team, as they will rely on libero Isabelle Maynor in the back row. Maynor is coming off an All-Region fall with Flushing and has the leadership and experience to shoulder a lot of pressure. She is joined on the squad by Flushing MB/OH Maysa Davis, one of the four juniors on the roster. The other juniors are OH/RS Taylor Sokolowski, OPP Julia Serafinski and MH Amiyah Clark. Seniors Morgan DeRidder and Alexia Patrick can also play the outside while Patrick is also a back-row option. Jael Cross is a talented middle that is in the mix as well. Miah Beck is a DS that will also have a big role alongside Maynor, while Kailey Wendling is the setter to run the offense and be a floor general. There’s plenty to like about this team, but they definitely will be tested by some big hitters in the region. They have the experience and confidence in the right spots to pick up some important wins.
U17 ELITE
Katie Naves will be the head coach for this team. It features all Class of 2021 members outside of 2022 libero Taryn Eckert. Eckert was a standout this fall for Clio, earning All-Region honors. She will be a big asset and really get a chance to grow this club season while playing up in age level. Olivia Norman is another All-Region pick from this fall. The middle from Lapeer will be a go-to option at the net. She will be joined by Sally Borowski, another athletic middle that has improving footwork. On the outside, Hannah Bees, Alex Widner and Anna Schutte will get plenty of swings and be part of a balanced attack. Ryleigh Wrinkle and Karsyn Delbridge are the two setters for U17 Elite and each can handle running the offense. Anna Johnson is also another steady option in the back row that will be alongside Eckert. Like U18 Elite, this squad can make some waves if it has its passing and serving down. Hitting won’t be a weakness, so if the team can stay in-system, it should be just fine.
U16 ELITE
Wendy Periard coaches this year’s U16 Elite squad. It is a roster compiled of entirely 2022 prospects and players that have a lot of familiarity with each other already. Morgan Terbush is the lone setter listed on the roster, which makes her the crucial piece to the team. Her player and leadership will be vital to Aresenal’s success this club season. Terbush won’t have a lack of talent to work with. She has a number of players that can move to the middle or either side of the net. Rachel Dunavant, Megan Gross, Rylen Pierce, Rachel Ross, Chloe Belle Carpenter, Shelbey Keeler and Alyssa Leroy all have experience on the attack and many can play multiple positions. Leroy can also move into the back row and join Zoe Cook, the team’s lone libero/DS. If Terbush can handle the workload, Arsenal should be just fine navigating through tough opponents in the region. She seems like a gamer that will be ready to give her all.
U15 ELITE
Brent Maynor will be the coach for this young squad. As you would expect with younger talent, some positions aren’t quite defined. There’s a number of players that could be placed all around the court, which could lead to some bumps in the road early in the club season. This team will have three setting options in Nava Sanocki, Grace Osborn and Mikayla Weyandt. Sanocki is penciled in as a straight setter while Osborn can play the outside and Weyandt can play on the right. Abriana Everett is a promising hitter that could play every position on the court. She’s going to make an impact, it’s just a matter of where she settles in. Lola Spohm and Isabella Stephens are to expected middles while Amber Lamphier and Aubrey Sharnowski will primarily be on the outside. Brooklyn Wilcox could also see time on the outside, but also could play in the backrow alongside libero Sophie Phillips.
