Oldham County high schools, including reigning 8th Region champion North Oldham, feature any opportunities for freshmen to play early in their prep careers.
Here are four Oldham County eighth graders on the rise.
Emma Closurdo: A 5-8 eighth grade outside hitter, Closurdo is a student-athlete from South Oldham Middle School. Already productive at hitting and blocking from the left side, Closurdo shows versatility through the ability to pass and play defense when she gets to the back row. Closurdo is competing for Union Asics 14-1.
Carmen Kelly: A 5-8 eighth grade middle hitter, Kelly is a student-athlete from Oldham County Middle School. Thus far in her young volleyball career, Kelly has demonstrated that she can attack and possesses both the offensive and defensive skills that are key for playing middle hitter. Kelly is competing for KIVA 14 Black.
Caroline Massey: A 5-5 eighth grade opposite hitter, Massey is a student-athlete from East Oldham Middle School. Despite being a young eighth grader, Massey has shown leadership skills during her middle school career while emerging as a solid hitter who moves well. Massey is competing for Union Asics 13-1.
Emery Stephens: A 5-9 eight grade middle blocker, Stephens is a student-athlete from North Oldham Middle School. Headed into a tradition-rich high school program that is a reigning region champion, Stephens is a talented young middle blocker who reads opposing setters well and has shown the ability to elevate at the net. Stephens is competing for Union Asics 14-1.
