Here are five underrated Eastern Kentucky juniors-to-be.
Hannah Akers: A sophomore middle hitter, Akers is a student-athlete from Pikeville High School. Akers recorded 100-plus kills in 36 matches for perennial 15th Region championship contender Pikeville during the 2019 high school volleyball season. An athletic middle hitter, Akers is able to work in tandem at the net, reads setters consistently and possesses solid blocking skills. Heading into her junior season, Akers is set to help lead her high school squad.
Molly Boyd: A sophomore setter/outside hitter, Boyd is a student-athlete from Prestonsburg High School. Boyd played in 23 of Prestonsburg’s 25 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season, logging 139 kills, 259 assists, 169 digs and 37 service aces. Boyd led Prestonsburg in assists while ranking second in kills and digs. A versatile player, Boyd is an excellent passer and hits consistently from the left side. Heading into her junior season, Boyd competed for Bluegrass Volleyball Academy of Eastern Kentucky earlier in the year.
Macy Gullett: A sophomore defensive specialist/libero, Gullett is a student-athlete from Wolfe County High School. A defensive standout who is one of the most improved players in the 14th Region, Gullett appeared in 31 of Wolfe County’s 34 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season, registering 118 digs. Productive passing and serving, Gullett thrives when it comes to reading a block.
Hannah Mitchell: A sophomore setter, Mitchell is a student-athlete from Leslie County High School. Over 19 matches (35 sets) in the 2019 high school volleyball season, Mitchell posted 123 assists and 25 digs. Poised to make a larger impact for Leslie County in the 2020 prep season, Mitchell has delivered as a highly productive setter. Agile enough to move her way around the court quickly, Mitchell shows athleticism in the role of a hitter or blocker.
Sylvia Ratliff: A sophomore setter/right side, Ratliff is a student-athlete from East Ridge High School. Ratliff chipped in for her high school team throughout the 2019 prep season, finishing with 56 kills, 89 assists and 46 digs over the squad’s 30 matches. Versatile, Ratliff is developing into a go-to hitter on the right side. In addition to hitting, Ratliff has shown the ability to be a precise passer while setting from various parts of the court.
