Here are five underrated Eastern Kentucky sophomores-to-be.
Mya Burgess: A freshman middle blocker/middle hitter, Burgess is a student-athlete from Prestonsburg High School. Burgess is set to carry momentum into her sophomore season and prove why she is underrated. As a freshman during the 2019 prep volleyball season, Burgess registered 83 kills, 45 assists, 109 digs and 41 service aces in 25 matches. Earlier in the year, Burgess competed for Bluegrass Volleyball Academy of Eastern Kentucky and showed improvement. Burgess uses both hands consistently and is both observant and communicative.
Randi Delong: A freshman opposite/outside hitter, DeLong is a student-athlete from Johnson Central High School. DeLong helped to pace Johnson Central throughout the 2019 high school volleyball season. One of the state’s top young prep softball players, DeLong is earning more respect on the volleyball court. Able to hit consistently from either side and a player who moves well, DeLong is productive around the net and passes well.
Emma Owens: A freshman libero, Owens is a student-athlete from Harlan High School. Owens appeared in 12 of Harlan’s 23 matches during the 2019 prep volleyball season. She is among the top young defensive players in the 13th Region. Prepared to step in and help to lead Harlan later in the year, Owens is a skilled defensive standout who has shown the ability to thrive in passing, digging and ball handling.
Adeline Turner: A versatile freshman, Turner is a student-athlete from Jackson City High School. Turner, who can play multiple positions, contributed in each of Jackson City’s 26 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season. A solid hitter and passer who has steadily improved, Turner is among the most underrated volleyball players in the 14th Region. Turner is poised to take on a larger role for Jackson City in the 2020 prep volleyball campaign. An athletic young volleyball player, Turner is able to react quickly to make digs and finishes strong.
Caroline Wright: A freshman right side hitter/setter, Wright is a student-athlete from Pikeville High School. Wright appeared in 35 of 37 matches for Pikeville in 2019, logging 50 kills, 13 blocks, 51 assists and 28 digs. A versatile player, Wright excels hitting from the right side and is a skilled passer. Wright made a strong impression as a freshman and will rank as one of the top sophomores in the 15th Region when the 2020 high school volleyball season opens.
