As we continue our fun assessment of Indiana’s big kids, we move on to the class of 2022, where the top five 6-footers are represented on two club teams, arguably two of the top three 16s teams in the state.
Katie Egenolf Katie Egenolf 6'1" | OH Center Grove | 2022 State #108 Nation IN , 6-1, OH/RS, Circle City 16 Purple (16-1), Center Grove High School
As her high school season was winding down, Katie took over and carried the Trojans all the way to the semi state, where they ran into buzzsaw and eventual repeat state champion New Castle. That didn’t phase the sophomore, and now pounds balls from both pins for club director Scott McQueen. I list her as a pin player here because that’s where Katie is primarily. However, on 15 Purple last season, she primarily played middle. Before this season halted abruptly, Miss Egenolf’s squad had already won multiple tournaments and she was hitting balls from the front row and back row, and even stepping in on serve receive from time to time. There is no question that this kid is next-level; now it’s just a matter of which level she gets. Rapidly approaching a 10-foot attack touch, she won’t be available for long.
Sky Moffitt Sky Moffitt 6'2" | MB Lafayette Jefferson | 2022 State IN , 6-1, MB, Circle City 16 Purple (16-1), Lafayette Jefferson High School
In years past, Lafayette Jeff was a volleyball powerhouse. These days, the Bronchs are lucky to compete….which makes Sky that much more special. Everyone during the high school season knew she was getting the ball, and she still dominated. Now she’s on a bonafide club team and can show off her speed and power, not to mention the defensive capability she has. She blocks and attacks quickly, and does so gracefully. Also quickly approaching a 10-foot attack touch, Sky should be mentioned much more once the club season resumes.
Ella Bostic Ella Bostic 6'0" | S Carmel | 2022 State #45 Nation IN , 6-0, S, Munciana 16 Ninjas (16-1), Carmel High School
Ella is the first of two Ellas on this list, and is the only setter. Most setters in the Central Indiana area are significantly shorter; think 5-8 or 5-9. It’s a nice departure from the norm to see this tall redhead run an offense. Her hands are fast and deceptive, can run a quick offense or something slower when things are out of system, and is a clear leader. She’s been on a Munciana team for a couple of years now, which means she’s accustomed to competing at the highest level and winning regularly. This kid is the whole package, and a rare (and tall) one at that.
Ella Peter Ella Peter 6'0" | MB Noblesville | 2022 State IN , 6-0, MB/RS, Circle City 16 Purple (16-1), Noblesville High School
Ella 1A on this list is a multi-tool attacker with room to grow. She’s started on her high school team since her freshman year, and can hit any set at any tempo along the net. She’s also blocked in multiple positions along the net as well, culminating in a full understanding of what everyone’s responsibility is both offensively and defensively. Quiet in person, she’s fiercely competitive on the court and would be a nice addition for any school at any level.
Lovie Wallace Lovie Wallace 6'0" | MB Hamilton Southeastern | 2022 State IN , 6-0, MB, Munciana 16 Ninjas (16-1), Heritage Christian School
As the “other” middle at HC ( Raven Colvin Raven Colvin 6'0" | MB Heritage Christian | 2021 State IN , Class of ’21 and Purdue commit is the other), she’s been overlooked for a bit. Lovie can no longer hide—teams can no longer take a break when Raven is out. Playing at much bigger than her 6-0 frame, I would not be surprised if she’s grown a bit since this author saw her play a month ago. Yet another winner on this list, Lovie led the team in blocks in the Indiana 2A State Championship back in November to earn HC their first volleyball title. As far as her physical attributes are concerned, she’s fast, she’s aggressive, she’s strong, and she’s hypercompetitive. I’m convinced, when all is said and done, that this kid can be the best middle in this class in the state by the time she graduates.
