Not every role is as visually pleasing as the next, but without every athlete doing their part the idea of victory is anything but a foregone conclusion. Each individual has to step up and knock down their responsibilities.
On offense that fact rings especially true when discussing the Setter position. These are the individuals giving the front line the opportunity for all those highlight-reel dynamics the sport is so incredibly renowned for. Here in Michigan when it comes to 15U Setters to know, that lists features prospects such as…
SOPHIA DAWKINS
Lying in her highlights on Maxpreps.com from the 2019-20 season at Berkley High School are a wealth of talents best applied to the back row. Among those traits is being adept at getting low quickly on the dig and using her setting skills to turn an opposing rally into one for her team. From the serving line Dawkins shoots bullets into the back row, but not directly at any one player. This approach can cause a delay in the defense and sometimes that’s all she needs to earn herself another ace. Right now this five-foot-eight freshman is part of Legacy 15-2 ADIDAS.
MEAH PALMATIER
With a standing reach of 83 inches and a wingspan of 63 inches according to Michigangirlssportsreport.com, Palmatier plays her club ball with Attack Volleyball 15U National Black. This member of the class of 2023 at Williamston High School also stands in at just over five-foot-four and has a resume that includes an Approach Jump of 101 inches, a Block Jump of 99 inches and a 17 inch Vertical.
MARGO SUDZINA
Currently this five-foot-five member of the class of 2023 takes the court for Unified Volleyball 15-2 in Rochester Hills, but during the high school season she played a fairly important role with Notre Dame Prep in Oakland County. It was then Sudzina, who wears number seven during the prep campaign, but is listed as number 46 in club action, charted 474 assists, 202 digs, 59 aces and six kills in 134 sets played.
MADELYN ROTTMAN
Representing Attack Volleyball 15U National Black, a height of five-foot-nine serves this player well. In particular, she has an Approach Jump of eight-feet-eight, a Block Jump of eight-foot-six and a 17.5 inch Vertical. A freshman at Lansing Christian High School, Rottman, who lives in Holt and wears number 36 in prep play, but dons number 18 in club action, has a Wingspan just shy of five-foot-eight and an eight-foot-eight Vertical Touch, as well.
KAYLEIGH WINIARSKI
Because she plays for a prep program at Notre Dame Prep in Pontiac so big it doesn’t have a league it competes in this member of the class of 2023 probably wasn’t able to amass the amount of statistics she might have liked. That being said she did find a way to sneak in four assists, three digs, one triple-block and one ace to help the Fighting Irish conclude ranked 17th in Michigan and 670th nationally after going 48-11-2 overall. Presently Winiarski plays for Unified Volleyball 15-2.
KARSYN NEAR
Attending St. Johns High School and living in Laingsburg, this right-handed Setter also plays Outside Hitter, stands five-feet-eight and is a member of the class of 2023. In her role with Attack Volleyball 15U National Black Near’s skill-set is highlighted by a 108 inch Approach Jump, a 104 inch Block Jump and a Standing Reach of 89 inches. The fact she also sports a 4.0 Grade Point Average, a 17 inch Vertical and a 69 inch Wing Span only make what she has to offer that much more valuable
Some of the other Setters across the state include Maddie Mulder and Hannah Brykalski of Legacy 15 Lite West, Hannah Roddis and Kaitlyn LaFear from Legacy 15 Elite East and Legacy 15-2 ADIDAS’s Eve Martin.
