Here are four Eastern Kentucky players under the radar.
Erin Akers: A junior right side/setter, Akers is a student-athlete from Betsy Layne High School. Akers, who competed for Bluegrass Volleyball Academy of Eastern Kentucky during the 2020 club season earlier in the year, has proven her versatility on multiple occasions previously. As a junior during the 2019 high school season, Akers ranked second in assists for her prep team while competing in a dozen matches. The versatile Akers is expected to make a larger impact for Betsy Layne in the 2020 high school season. An accurate passer, Akers is also a solid hitter from the right side who elevates well.
Emmalee Banks: A junior setter, Emmalee Banks is a student-athlete from Letcher County Central High School. Banks was on the floor in 22 of 53rd District champion Letcher County Central’s 25 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season. Banks contributed as perennial championship contender Letcher County Central reached the 14th Region Volleyball Tournament Semifinals in 2019. Showing leadership qualities, Banks posted 77 digs and 24 service aces over 68 sets during the 2019 prep season. Banks, who has already shown that she can run the offense, sets regularly, identifies blockers accurately and is a vocal leader.
Averie Brownell: A sophomore defensive specialist/libero, Brownell is a student-athlete from Wolfe County High School. Chipping in for 55th District Runner-up Wolfe County throughout the 2019 high school volleyball season, Brownell appeared in 25 of 34 matches. Logging valuable minutes, Brownell demonstrated the ability to dig consistently. Brownell pursues efficiently and can produce as a back row hitter.
Hannah Mitchell: A sophomore setter, Mitchell is a student-athlete from Leslie County High School. Mitchell emerged as a key contributor for Leslie County during the 2019 high school volleyball season, logging 123 assists and 25 digs in only 19 matches. Poised to take the floor more often for Leslie County in the 2020 high school volleyball season, Mitchell is a consistent setter. In addition her setting abilities, Mitchell has shown that she can dig and block consistently.
Kira Osborn: A junior outside hitter/right side, Osborn is a student-athlete from Martin County High School. Osborn competed in 30 of Martin County’s 35 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season, registering 69 kills, 124 digs and 57 service aces. Able to deliver as a hitter from either side, Osborn fares well at the net in multiple roles. Osborn blocks opponents regularly and works well with middle hitters, especially when blocking in tandem.
Lilly Rivera: A junior libero/defensive specialist, Rivera is a student-athlete from East Ridge High School. Rivera played in 28 of East Ridge’s 30 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season. Over 88 sets in the 2019 prep campaign, Rivera recorded 95 digs. Poised to help pace East Ridge during the 2020 high school volleyball season, Rivera performs well as a back row hitter. Rivera is comfortable digging or pursuing.
