Here are four 2019 region runner-ups to watch.
Breckinridge County: Excelling throughout the 2019 high school volleyball season, Breckinridge County finished runner-up to Owensboro Catholic in the 3rd Region. Breckinridge County compiled a 31-5 record in 2019, winning more matches than any other 3rd Region volleyball team. The Fighting Tigers claimed the 11th District title prior to competing in the 2020 3rd Region Volleyball Tournament. Junior Audrey Whitworth is due back for Breckinridge County after logging 324 kills, 55 digs and 57 service aces as a sophomore.
Male: Talent-heavy Male finished runner-up to rival Assumption in both the 26th District and the 8th Region during the 2019 high school volleyball season. Assumption defeated Male 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-11) in the 2019 8th Region Volleyball Tournament title match. Male compiled a 27-12 record in 2019. A Second Team All-State selection, junior middle blocker Madison Rice-Locket is the top player headed back for the Bulldogs. Rice-Locket is among the best high school volleyball players in the state.
Paul Laurence Dunbar: After finishing runner-up to rival Henry Clay in the 11th Region in 2019, Paul Laurence Dunbar is reloading for the upcoming season. Before finishing runner-up to Henry Clay in the 11th Region, Paul Laurence Dunbar topped nemesis Tates Creek for the 43rd District title. Second Team All-State libero Caroline Cole Caroline Cole DS/L Dunbar | 2021 State KY is poised to help pace Paul Laurence Dunbar, which exited the 2019 high school volleyball season 29-10.
St. Henry: The Crusaders finished runner-up to familiar foe Notre Dame in the 9th Region during the 2019 prep volleyball season. St. Henry put together a 24-13 record in 2019, outlasting longtime rival Dixie Heights 3-2 ( (22-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 15-11) in the 34th District Volleyball Tournament title match. First Team All-State middle hitter Taylor Preston Taylor Preston 6'2" | OH St. Henry | 2022 State #66 Nation KY (6-2) is set to lead St. Henry in the 2020 prep volleyball season. Preston thrived throughout her sophomore campaign in 2019, delivering 374 kills and 174 digs through her first 34 matches.
