The calendar reads June 15th, meaning college coaches can now have direct communication with prospective student-athletes. For many prospects in the Class of 2022, this milestone represents the start of a college selection process that will alter the course of their young lives. It’s a time surely filled with anxiety and uncertainty as thousands of families brace for the major decisions that lie ahead.
On top of this, there is still an active dead period for Division 1 schools that runs through July 31st. This prevents any in-person visits or camps from taking place, effectively limiting coaches to written or cellular communication with prospects. After waiting so long to establish communication with coaches, it’s understandable that some athletes may feel the need to make a collegiate pledge as quickly as possible. On the other hand, prospects often value being able to see campuses firsthand before making a decision, which is something that can’t be done until August.
The point here is that there are undoubtedly many emotions and preoccupations running through the minds of those in the Class of 2022. With that in mind, I can give one big piece of advice:
Be your best advocate.
Here at Prep Dig, we try our hardest to showcase as many great athletes as possible and to provide recruiting opportunities for colleges at all levels. But, in reality, any athlete’s best recruiting resource is themselves. So, athletes: as coaches begin making contact, strive to be your own biggest supporter. Be active, be confident, and be positive. Nobody has a completely storybook recruiting process, and it’s normal to feel stress along the way. Focus on the things you can control, which largely comes down to how you present yourself to coaches. Communicate what you’re looking for, and the right school will find you. Be deliberate and ask questions. Be patient, too, as this is only the beginning!
And, as always, don’t forget to enjoy the ride.
