Even though we start with a specific list of players, there are always new players who catch our eyes over the course of a season. Here are some KC Metro players we previously didn’t know much about who has passed the eye test in the first month of the season.
Ady Horn – 5’8″ Setter – 2023 – Staley High School
Horn is among the city leaders in assists early in her sophomore season. She is averaging just under 8 per set for 293 dished out halfway through her fall campaign. This is a big jump from her 147 a year ago in 42 sets played. She earned a season-high 58 assists in a five-set win over Central last week.
Rachel Spainhour – 6’0″ MB – 2021 – Liberty North High School
Spainhour’s numbers don’t jump out at you off the stat sheet but she has been efficient and a key to the 9-0 start for Liberty North. The senior is hitting at a .352 clip and averaging around 2 kills a set from the middle blocker position. She has also contributed 43 blocks as a force at the net.
Kayla Smocks – 5’3 L – 2021 – St. Teresa’s Academy
The Stars have not shied away from competition in the 2020 season playing nationally ranked Skutt Catholic (Omaha) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Kansas). A player who has stood out defensively thus far is Smocks. This season she has transitioned into the libero position and has been solid on the year with 170 digs and just under 200 receptions. She had a season-high of 37 last week in a win over Bishop Miege.
Katie Kasten – 6’0″ MB – 2021 – Smithville High School
Kasten is looking to end her final season with a bang. The 6’0″ senior has already almost eclipsed her kill total from a year ago in the first half of the season. Last fall, the middle would finish the year with 145 kills. She sits at 122 with a month ago. She adds a .370 hitting percentage and 32 blocks.
Lily Holden – 6’3″ MB – 2022 – St. Pius X High School
Holden has already passed her kill numbers from a year ago in only 8 matches this season. She is a big reason the Warriors are off to a 6-2 start. She currently has 66 kills and a .352 hitting percentage. At 6’3″, she gets her hands on many balls defensively and has 20 solo blocks.
