Virginia is fortunate to not only have an amazing girl’s talent pool, but also a great talent of boys players as well in three major areas: Tidewater, Richmond Metro area and Northern Virginia. We will cover each of the clubs and highlight players throughout the season and cover special events that are happening. Our first team for the Tidewater area is the Coastal Hampton Roads. Affectionately known as CHR, the Coastal Hampton Roads is affiliated with the Coastal Virginia club farther east but runs pretty much on their own. They service players in the Hampton Roads area, Gloucester and the are between Virginia Beach and Richmond. They have a great staff of coaches including coaches that are in the USA Volleyball High Performance program and have grown into one of the more competitive clubs in the area. They have several of the top high school coaches on staff as well and regularly send their players onto top programs throughout the country.
This season, two of the top boy’s players have already committed to their next step in their volleyball career. Senior Outside Hitter, Brandon Leary, will be joining the nationally ranked powerhouse George Mason University Patriots upon graduation. Leary is a dynamic and explosive athlete who continues to develop into one of the top players in the state. Armed with a powerful attacking skill set and great vertical, Leary is a primary scoring option for CHR 18’s. He continues to improve with his defense and serve receive which is vital in top players on the pins at powerful programs like George Mason University. Brandon will also be a key offensive component for the LC Bird High School team in Chesterfield, Virginia.
Raymond Green is the leader of the defense for the Coastal Hampton Roads Team as their starting libero. The 5’11 defender is stout defender with lightning quick reflexes and superior speed to cover massive amounts of court. He has a high volleyball IQ and is a relentless and aggressive defender. He is solid on serve receive and defensively and is greatly improved in reading hitter swings and tendencies. Green will be taking his defensive prowess to NCAA Division II Alderson Broaddus University in Phillipi, WV. He will finish his scholastic career on the court for the Woodside when the season resumes in February for the VHSL season.
Evan Snodgrass is a junior for the CHR program and Peninsula Catholic High School. The towering middle hitter is a dominant force at the net and one of the top hitters in the commonwealth. At 6’8, Evan is an overpowering blocker and very strong offensively, a great package for top tier programs. Evan has great blocking footwork and uses his hands well for space eating blocking moves and cutting off hitter angles. He has a fast arm and sees the defense and blockers to hit with range and power. He can run any of the offensive options for middle hitters and could transition to one of the pin positions, a dominant blocker on right side or the tall Outside Hitters that our national team is so fond of developing. Evan has made the decision to make a verbal commitment to join the Patriots of George Mason University in Fairfax.
Coastal Hampton Roads is running two boys programs this season and will be opening a 6 court facility in the coming months that will be a shining beacon on the volleyball community in the Hampton Roads corridor. There are a lot of facilities in commonwealth and the opening of this new Hampton Roads Sportsplex closes the gap between the predominately facilities in Virginia Beach and the multiple facilities in Richmond, Virginia. It’s an exciting time to be a volleyball player in the commonwealth with even more opportunities for players.
