Continue ReadingIndoor fall sports, specifically girls’ volleyball has had to wait during this 2020-21 academic calendar. Now the potential start date is in sight, as the NJSIAA’s Return-to-Play plan has instituted a four season format.
These young ladies can finally see their hope of a season happening potentially becoming a reality. The four season format has been in full swing with the Season 1 fall sports being concluded and Season 2 to start at the beginning of 2021.
Girls Volleyball has been pushed into the new Season 3 which will approximately start in the beginning of March. The potential postseason will be held in mid to late April with a hard deadline of April 24, 2021.
These changes, which the NJSIAA made in consultation with local health officials and Gov. Phil Murphy, are not subject to change.
“NJSIAA will continue to consult with DOH to determine if multi-team or multi-game events will be permissible; however, we expect decisions on expanding the scope of participants and/or teams will not be made until closer to the start of the season,” the memo said.
As for the moment, here are some biggest components from the latest update by the NJSIAA. As of now, the competition will be limited to three events per week with a maximum of 15 events. Also, the address of competition will be limited to two teams only at the moment which is potential to change.
As of now, everything has the potential to change but just the acknowledgement and success of Season 1 displays a sense of optimism. 80,000 athletes were able to participate in Season 1 which presents everyone else hope that these students will have a chance to play.
The return of play would signify a milestone with the potential address of being able to negotiate these unprecedented times due to COVID-19. Teams and players just want to be able to go out and get back to playing the sports they love.
A reminder of the Executive Order 187 issued by Governor Murphy for indoor gatherings (all subject to change) would be applied to girls’ volleyball as follows:
“Under the Executive Order, the number of people permitted at a practice or competition will be limited to 25% of the capacity of the room in which the event takes place, with such limit not to exceed 25 persons or be less than 10 persons. However, if the number of individuals who are necessary for the practice or competition, such as players, coaches and referees, is greater than 25 persons, the practice or competition may proceed as long as no individuals are present who are not necessary for the event. If this exception applies, the number of individuals at the event still may not exceed 25% of the capacity of the room or 150 persons, whichever is less.”
The opportunity for these women is great to be able to go out and showcase their skills as well as to their mental health. People who go out and play can help them through these times. Being able to serve, bump, set and spike just brings music to everyone’s ears. Everyone stay hopeful for the chance of high school volleyball.
Another update from the NJSIAA regarding Season 3 will be released closer to the March start date.
