There are teams with a great chance to have monster seasons’ who came up just short in 2019. One team to watch out for is Gloucester Tech.
Gloucester Tech was a good team last year with plenty of depth and gave everyone playing time to be able to showcase their ability. The team has lost a couple key pieces like: Megan Carnell-Tetlow and Taylor Downing. However, there are plenty of key players returning for Gloucester Tech to be tough out this season in the Olympic Conference. This presents a grand opportunity for them to improve off of 23-10 record.
The team is bringing back some outstanding talent and have the potential for a something special. The squad finished fourth in the conference and the fourth best record overall. They did end up winning their division in the conference which is necessary in The team was somewhat successful in postseason play losing in the finals of the Gloucester County Tournament to Williamstown. Then, in the NJSIAA tournament, Gloucester Tech lost in the first-round to Toms River South in the Group 3 section of the tournament.
Some players to look out for are Alexis Caltabiano, Krista Murray and Kyla Sayson. This team is going to be looking for Caltabiano to build off a monster sophomore campaign with 150 kills and 68 digs. She finished second on the team in kills as a sophomore. Now, as an upperclassmen she will be looked upon as the leader of this squad. She is going to be number one option now this year. Watch for her to have a monster season.
Murray is one of the several defensive specialists Gloucester Tech utilizes. She showed glimpses of her defensive prowess as junior with 124 digs. Her anticipation and court-awareness always had her in the best position to make a play when many thought she could not. As a senior, she could easily build off her numbers last year.
Lastly, we have Kyla Sayson. Sayson as a sophomore was the starting setter and had a monster season with 560 assists. She can pass with the best of them not just in the conference but the state. She has pinpoint accuracy and always knows where her teammates will be to help create a scoring opportuntity.
My concern for Gloucester Tech is who is going to step up as the second option behind Caltabiano. I’m leaning towards it will be Nicole Thomas who showed glimpses last season and even led the team in blocks with 25. If someone can become that second option, this squad will not miss a beat.
This is a squad that has 8 players returning and most of them made significant contributions last season. Will they be able to step up into their new roles? If so, watch out for them to make some noise this season.
