Teams have been going through the same situation with the pandemic and you can see that more and more teams are able to hang around with the teams at the top. They may not win but they are justifying how anyone can be beaten any given day. Let’s look at some of those recent matches.
Hunterdon Central holds off Livingston
Two squads in my Prep Dig top 10 did not disappoint as it was anyone’s match throughout. Hunterdon Central came out on top over Livingston. Led by Daniel Albano with 10 digs and John Harwell had eight kills as Hunterdon Central took a 25-17, 21-25, 25-18 victory.
Hunterdon Central was balanced in all phases and in a match where it was going to be a duel of the setters in Zach Choi and Gavin Lefebvre. Lefebvre was able to get more help around him than Choi did to come out victorious.
Pope John Rallies to Stun Jefferson
Just hours after I placed Jefferson in my top 10 more like top 5. They were stunned as Pope John rallied from a one-set deficit to take down Jefferson in three magnificent sets 19-25, 25-18, 25-20. Mr. Do it All Collin Mills was the difference. He did everything in his power to ensure Pope John would not be defeated. He led the squad in kills (10), blocks (3), and digs (17). He ensured he would not be denied.
Jefferson got off to such an easy start in the first set, it looked it was going to be simple but Pope John had other ideas coming out as a more aggressive squad in the final two sets to come out victorious. Shane Conley’s 13 kills and 13 digs were not enough for Jefferson.
Jackson Memorial Loses but Passes their Litmus Test
In a matchup that I watched vigorously was Southern against Jackson Memorial. I wanted to see if Jackson Memorial was deserving of their unbeaten record as well as going against one of the top dawgs in Southern. They came up short but they passed everything I wanted to see from them.
Southern was pushed to their limit after losing the first set and needed to rally to come out victorious, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22. How did they do it? They dug in defensively. Southern had 7 players recording multiple digs led by Ethan Case with 24.
As for Jackson Memorial, I needed to see if they worth the hype and recognition. They earned it all, next is to find a way to close out this type of game but they proved that they belong to be one of the contenders this season. Destan Llolla was in total command of the offense with 31 assists. Now, they just need to get over the hump.
