Southern Sweeps St. Joseph (Met.)
Tommy Deakyne had himself a day to remember this weekend. Deakyne had 32 kills for Southern as they swept St.Joseph (Met.) in a double-header this past Saturday. The first match went the distance and then the nightcap was a 2-0 sweep. Deakyne had 17 kills in the first match and 15 in the second. He really found his groove being a factor all over the court.
Dylan Lockwood was a significant contributor as well adding 26 assists each match to finish with 52 on the day. The two were on the same page throughout the day and made St. Joseph (Met.) pay.
Old Bridge Holds off Bridgewater-Raritan
In a tough two set match, Old Bridge was pushed in both sets but ended up pulling off the victory 25-21, 25-21. Nick Schon was the focal point as he finished with 21 assists on the day. He continued to spread the ball around to keep Bridgewater-Raritan off-balance. He ended up getting six players involved offensively to help them get the victory.
As for Bridgewater-Raritan, it’s a good test as it showcased they are capable of being able to play with the top squads. The next step is to force a match like this to a third or find a way to close out an upset.
Hunterdon Central Wins a Tough Three-Setter
In the matchup of the weekend, Hunterdon Central rallied to take down Newark East Side in three sets after losing the first and to end Newark East Side’s six match win streak. The result concluded 20-25, 25-18, 25-15. After dropping the first, Hunterdon Central made it a point of emphasis to get off to a better start and they did just that in both sets to pull away especially in the final frame.
Thomas Menyhert led the way for Hunterdon Central with 11 kills and Avery Gould added seven kills and five digs. For Newark East Side, Nicholas Lima totaled a game-high 14 kills with four blocks, 11 digs.
