It has been great to have high school volleyball back with now just a short turnaround after the spring season. The volleyball has been nothing short than phenomenal. The level and quality of play is up there. Some teams have surprised early on in the season with some fast starts. Let’s take a look at these four squads that have caught my eye.
River Dell (Big North)
Many could argue that say River Dell was a team on the rise in the spring and I agree but what has impressed me is how they have handled knowing teams are not going to gloss over them and give them their best shot.
The team has responded great and has played great team volleyball with multiple players with 20+ kills and 20+ digs. Their real litmus test is about to start up with Immaculate Heart, Northern Highlands and Demarest all still on the schedule. Don’t be surprised if they win one of those.
South Plainfield (GMC)
After an opening defeat, South Plainfield has rallied off six straight wins to have them at a 6-1 record. A team that finished under .500 in the spring. Their success is they are getting off to faster starts which give them an opportunity to win the first set.
This team is very upperclassmen heavy with experience from last season. They have come together and have the opportunity to make some noise with Natalie Rivera as the catalyst.
Rutherford (NJIC)
Rutherford in the spring finished exactly at .500 and it was a tale of multiple seasons for them as they would win a couple, lose a couple, win a couple. They kept going in and of being successful. So far this season, its been nothing but winning as they are 7-0 and have only dropped one set.
The team is led by a two-headed monster in Jocelyn Rodriguez and Harmony Marquez. The offense is clicking when both are on their game. It will be intriguing to see if anyone can just take one of them away and see if they can respond. So far nobody has been able too.
Roselle Catholic (UCC)
Roselle Catholic in the spring that hovered around .500 finishing just above it at a 7-5 clip. The team was struggling to find consistency trying to build off performances especially at the end of the season. This season the team has been nothing short of dominant. They have only lost one set and that was in their season opener.
The team is extremely young with only one senior on the roster so this is a sign that they aren’t going to be competitive for just this season. They are in it for the long haul with Gabriella Meloni leading the charge.
